Four stories that mattered

Prudential term life goes on sale inside the SoFi app

SoFi and Prudential Financial announced on 21 October 2026 that more than 15 million SoFi members can now get a quote for, apply for and buy Prudential's SimplyTerm term life insurance in one digital flow inside the SoFi app. The companies said eligible members can often get coverage in minutes without a medical exam or lab work. The policy is issued by Pruco Life Insurance Company and is not available in every state. SoFi is not affiliated with Prudential.

Buying in an app does not change what you are buying. It is still a term policy from Prudential, underwritten from your application answers and database checks. Fast no-exam approval usually comes with lower coverage limits than fully underwritten term, and the rate may not be the best one you could get after an exam. Compare quotes for the same term length and amount before you accept one.

A widow with dementia sues Allianz Life after it paid her husband's identical care claim

A California policyholder with dementia filed suit against Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America on 21 October 2026 in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, seeking more than $35 million in damages. She and her late husband were co-insured under a 1999 "Secure Senior" comprehensive long-term care policy. The complaint says Allianz paid his full benefits for care at a licensed residential care facility for the elderly, then refused full benefits on her near-identical claim at another facility with the same license, saying it was not a "Nursing Facility" under the policy and paying most charges as room and board at 80%. The suit alleges this breaches a California law that requires coverage of that kind of care. It brings claims for breach of contract, bad faith and financial elder abuse. The allegations have not been tested in court.

Families claiming on older long-term care or hybrid policies should ask the insurer in writing which policy definition it is relying on when it denies care, and check whether a state law overrides that definition.

Globe Life's health losses lead it to cut 2026 guidance

Globe Life cut its 2026 net operating income guidance to $15.35–$15.65 per diluted share, from $15.55–$15.95, in third-quarter results that Insurance Business reported on 22 October 2026. The cut follows an underwriting loss of about $16 million at Evry Health, a group health business it agreed to buy in 2023. Total premium revenue grew 7% to $1.31 billion. On the life side, American Income Life premium rose 4%, and Liberty National life net sales rose 7%, with its average producing agent count up 9%.

The problem is in group health, not in Globe Life's life insurance block. For people who own Globe Life, American Income or Liberty National policies, life premium and sales are still growing. Nothing in the results changes policy terms or claims.

Legacy Marketing Group and Malibu Life announced on 21 October 2026 two fixed indexed annuities, PillarMark with MultiRider and SpireMark with MultiRider Max. The contracts are issued by TruSpire Retirement Insurance Company of Irving, Texas, and both offer lifetime income riders, an enhanced death benefit and 10 allocation options. The options include the Bloomberg Bitcoin US 100 10% Index and Nasdaq-100 based indexes. TruSpire is licensed in 43 states and D.C., not including New York. AM Best rated it B++ (Good) as of August 2026.

A fixed indexed annuity linked to a bitcoin index does not hold bitcoin. Credited interest is limited by caps and participation rates, and index losses are not subtracted from your contract value. What matters more is the insurer's strength. B++ is below the A-range ratings many buyers require, and a guaranteed income rider is only as good as the company behind it.

One number

$85.2 billion — U.S. life insurers' AI-linked investments at the end of the second quarter of 2026, according to Moody's, as reported on 23 October 2026. That is about 1.4% of their cash and invested assets, and up 24% from $69 billion at the end of 2025. Holdings of digital infrastructure debt rose 34% to $39.5 billion.

The share is still small, but these assets back the guarantees in policies and annuities. Moody's says the true exposure is probably larger than the direct figures show.
