Aflac vs Unum
Both sell life insurance mainly at work; Aflac adds direct final expense and an A+ AM Best rating, while Unum is group-driven and rated A.
Verdict
Aflac and Unum are both publicly traded workplace insurers, and for most people neither is a company you choose from a website. You meet them at open enrollment, where life insurance sits next to disability, accident and critical illness plans. Both are better understood as supplemental coverage than as a family's main policy.
The difference is the shape of the business. Unum is a group benefits insurer: employers buy group term life, AD&D and disability for their workforce, and employees add voluntary term or whole life by payroll deduction. Its Colonial Life unit sells individual term (10, 15, 20 and 30 years) and whole life at the workplace. Unum does not sell life insurance directly to individuals outside work. Aflac's life business is smaller and is mostly individual policies: term of roughly 10 to 30 years and whole life sold at the workplace, plus final expense whole life sold directly to consumers online or by phone through Tier One Insurance Company, with no medical exam.
On financial strength, AM Best affirmed Aflac's main U.S. insurer at A+ (Superior) in September 2025 and Unum's main insurers at A (Excellent) the same month. Unum also publishes S&P (A), Moody's (A2) and Fitch (A) ratings; the Aflac profile lists only AM Best. Each has a record you should know: Aflac disclosed a June 2025 data breach affecting about 22.65 million people, and Unum settled a 2004 multistate examination over disability claims handling. Neither was ranked in the J.D. Power 2026 individual life study.
Choose Aflac if
- You want a small final expense policy that you can buy directly, with health questions but no exam, at ages 45 to 80.
- Your employer offers Aflac and you want portable term or whole life paired with accident, cancer or hospital plans.
- You weigh the AM Best rating and want the A+ (Superior) level over A (Excellent).
- You want a workplace policy you own and can keep after changing jobs.
Choose Unum if
- Your employer offers Unum group life or disability and you want guaranteed issue amounts and family coverage through work.
- You value a published claims commitment: Unum says it makes a life claim decision within five business days of receiving complete information.
- You want ratings from all four major agencies on record, all in the A range.
- You are looking mainly for employer-paid group term life and AD&D, which is the core of Unum's life business.
- You want Colonial Life individual term for a longer level period than a typical group plan offers.

Before you decide
Because group coverage usually ends when you leave a job, check portability and conversion terms before relying on either; keeping group life insurance when you leave a job explains the options. Compare what you would pay for individually underwritten term to see how workplace coverage stacks up, using how to compare life insurance quotes fairly. Check the rating dates in AM Best, S&P, Moody's and Fitch ratings explained, and read supplemental (voluntary) life insurance at work to judge whether an add-on plan should replace or supplement a larger policy.
