Allianz Life vs Athene

Both sell annuities through advisers; Allianz also sells indexed universal life, while Athene is Apollo-owned and sells no new life insurance.

Verdict

Allianz Life and Athene are better compared as annuity companies than as life insurers. Both are among the largest U.S. sellers of fixed indexed annuities, both sell only through financial professionals, and neither offers term or whole life to new buyers. Their appearance in life insurance rankings reflects other business: Allianz's indexed universal life policy, and older life blocks that Athene picked up through acquisitions.

The biggest difference is ownership. Allianz Life is a wholly owned subsidiary of Germany's Allianz SE, a long-established insurer and asset manager. Athene was founded in 2009 by Apollo Global Management and has been wholly owned by Apollo since January 2022. Athene's Bermuda reinsurers and private-equity ownership draw regulatory and legal scrutiny, and the profile points to pension risk transfer lawsuits against its employer clients; Athene itself is not a defendant in them. Allianz's recent reputational mark is a July 2025 data breach through a third-party customer system that exposed information about most of its roughly 1.4 million U.S. customers.

On product lines, Allianz sells fixed index annuities, registered index-linked annuities (RILAs) and the Accumulator indexed universal life policy. Athene sells fixed indexed annuities, RILAs, multi-year guaranteed annuities, immediate and structured settlement annuities, and group pension annuities for employers. On ratings, both hold A+ (Superior) from AM Best: Allianz as of March 2026 and Athene as of August 2025. Allianz is rated AA (Very Strong) by S&P against A+ for Athene.

Choose Allianz Life if

  • You want an indexed universal life policy built around cash-value accumulation, working with a financial professional, and you are not in New York.
  • You prefer a subsidiary of a large European insurance group over a private-equity-owned company.
  • You want the higher S&P and Moody's ratings among the two (AA and Aa3, against A+ and A1 for Athene).
  • You are comparing fixed index and RILA options from one company with a broad annuity line.

Choose Athene if

  • Your need is purely an annuity, such as a multi-year guaranteed or immediate annuity, and you want a wider range of fixed-annuity types.
  • You own an older Athene-serviced policy (such as Liberty Life or Presidential Life) and need to know where to call; former Aviva USA life policies are now serviced by Accordia Life, a Global Atlantic company.
  • You want a stated claims timeline: Athene says it verifies a death claim in 5 to 7 business days and pays within 8 to 10 business days of receiving complete paperwork.
  • You are comfortable with Apollo ownership after reading about its structure.
