Allianz Life vs Jackson National Life

Allianz sells indexed annuities and indexed universal life; Jackson sells variable annuities and RILAs and has sold no new life insurance since 2012.

Verdict

Allianz Life and Jackson National Life both sell annuities through financial professionals rather than directly to consumers, and neither is a place to buy term or whole life insurance. The comparison is mostly about annuity style, ownership and what each still does in life insurance.

Allianz Life is the U.S. subsidiary of Germany's Allianz SE and says it became the top U.S. carrier of fixed index annuities in 2000, citing Wink data. It also sells registered index-linked annuities (RILAs) and one life product, the Accumulator indexed universal life policy, which requires full underwriting and is not offered in New York. Jackson stopped selling life insurance in 2012, when it decided buying mature blocks was a more efficient way to diversify. Its life business now consists of older Jackson policies and blocks it acquired, including Life Insurance Company of Georgia (2005) and Reassure America (2012). Its flagship product is the variable annuity, alongside RILAs, fixed indexed and fixed annuities.

Variable annuities and RILAs are securities that carry market risk and often layered fees, so they behave differently from the fixed index annuity that anchors Allianz's line. Ownership also differs: Jackson Financial has been an independent company listed on the NYSE (JXN) since September 2021, after separating from Prudential plc. On ratings, Allianz Life holds A+ (Superior) from AM Best as of March 2026 and AA (Very Strong) from S&P; Jackson National holds A (Excellent) from AM Best as of February 2026 and A (Strong) from S&P. Each has a mark on its record: a July 2025 Allianz data breach affecting most of its roughly 1.4 million customers, and Jackson's heavy dependence on market-sensitive variable annuity guarantees.

Choose Allianz Life if

  • You want indexed universal life for cash-value accumulation and work with a financial professional outside New York.
  • You are comparing fixed index annuities, where Allianz has been a leading seller.
  • You prefer a subsidiary of a large European insurance group.
  • You give weight to the higher agency ratings: A+ from AM Best, AA from S&P and Aa3 from Moody's.

Choose Jackson National if

  • You own an older Jackson, Life of Georgia or Reassure America life policy and need to know where to call; Reassure America holders should use the contact details on their latest correspondence.
  • You want a variable annuity or RILA with investment choices and optional lifetime withdrawal benefits, and you accept the fees and market risk.
  • You prefer a publicly traded issuer with detailed SEC filings and its own New York company.
  • Your plan involves no new life insurance at all, only annuities.
