American Family Life vs State Farm

Two agent-sold life arms of mutual P&C groups: State Farm is far larger, rated A+ and pays dividends; AmFam is rated A and offers no-exam term to $750,000.

Verdict

American Family Life and State Farm have a lot in common. Each is the life company of a large auto and home insurer owned by a policyholder mutual, and each sells mainly through exclusive agents, so you will not see competitors' prices from either. Both are most natural for households that already insure a car or home with the same agent.

The differences are scale, product mix and track record. State Farm's life companies ranked #6 among U.S. life groups by 2024 individual life premiums ($5.89 billion), against #58 ($484.8 million) for American Family. State Farm sells participating whole life that can earn dividends, which are not guaranteed, and said its life companies paid a record $924 million in dividends for 2025. American Family's DreamSecure line includes whole life, but its profile does not describe dividends. State Farm also sells universal life, return of premium term and second-to-die versions. American Family offers term in 10, 15, 20 and 30 years, a simplified-issue term policy with no exam, adjustable life, and children's and senior whole life.

On ratings, AM Best downgraded State Farm's life companies to A+ (Superior) from A++ in November 2025, while American Family Life holds A (Excellent), affirmed September 2025. State Farm ranked 2nd of 23 brands in the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Individual Life Insurance Study; American Family was not among the ranked brands. State Farm's best-known legal fight was a universal life cost of insurance verdict, upheld on appeal in 2020.

Choose American Family Life if

  • You already insure your car, home or farm with an AmFam agent and want life coverage in the same office.
  • You want no-exam term: DreamSecure Simple Term runs from $50,000 to $750,000, though amounts above $250,000 require another eligible AmFam policy.
  • You are shopping for a small senior whole life policy ($10,000 or $15,000, ages 50 to 80) or a children's whole life policy.
  • You want an adjustable permanent policy (DreamSecure Flexible Life) that lets you change premiums and coverage.

Choose State Farm Life if

  • You have a State Farm agent and want participating whole life, with the caveat that dividends are not guaranteed.
  • You want the stronger third-party service signal: a 2nd-place J.D. Power 2026 ranking and a published payout timeline of about one to three business days after it has everything it needs.
  • You want options AmFam's profile does not list, such as return of premium term, survivorship universal life or a long-term care rider.
  • You want term that converts to permanent coverage regardless of health.
  • You do not live in Massachusetts, where State Farm does not currently sell life insurance.
