Banner Life vs Protective Life
Two Japanese-owned, broker-sold term sellers: Banner Life is a term specialist downgraded by AM Best in 2026; Protective adds guaranteed UL and higher ratings.
Verdict
Banner Life and Protective Life share a lot: both sell level term for up to 40 years (Banner in 10 to 40-year lengths, Protective's Classic Choice in 10 to 40), both rely heavily on independent brokers and agents, and both are owned by Japanese insurers. Meiji Yasuda completed its purchase of Banner Life (long marketed as Legal & General America) on February 2, 2026. Daiichi Life Group has owned Protective since 2015.
The differences are in product range and ratings. Banner's profile lists term life and a guaranteed universal life policy used for conversions; it does not sell whole life or indexed or variable universal life as new business. Protective also sells guaranteed universal life with level premiums, fixed and variable universal life, single premium whole life and annuities, and it has built its size partly by acquiring other insurers' policy blocks. On March 13, 2026, AM Best downgraded Banner from A+ (Superior) to A (Excellent), saying the rating now reflects Banner on its own inside Meiji Yasuda. Protective's A+ (Superior) was affirmed in September 2025, a date worth rechecking.
Neither stands out on service scores. Protective ranked 14th of 23, below the study average, in the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Individual Life Insurance Study; Banner was not among the ranked insurers. Both have a legal history over older universal life policies: Banner settled a cost-of-insurance class action for $38.2 million in 2020, and Protective was the defendant in a 2021 California Supreme Court ruling on lapse-protection laws.
Choose Banner Life if
- You want a term specialist with lengths from 10 to 40 years, coverage above $10 million and stackable term riders.
- You want to apply online, with instant approval for eligible applicants up to $5 million, or through a broker.
- A term policy with a conversion to guaranteed universal life is all the permanent coverage you need.
- You accept an A (Excellent) AM Best rating following the 2026 downgrade.
Choose Protective Life if
- You want guaranteed universal life with level premiums and a built-in return of premium feature.
- You may want fixed or variable universal life, or single premium whole life, from the same insurer.
- You weigh the higher published ratings: A+ AM Best, AA- from S&P and Fitch.
- You want a conversion rider that adds chronic illness access (ExtendCare), outside New York and California.

Before you decide
Because both sell through brokers, ask an independent agent to quote the same amount, term length and health class from each, as described in how to compare life insurance quotes fairly. Compare conversion deadlines and the permanent product you would convert into (converting term life to permanent: how the conversion option works). Check rating dates and the difference between AM Best and S&P grades in AM Best, S&P, Moody's and Fitch ratings explained, and see when your life insurance policy is sold to another company for what a change of ownership means for an existing policy.
