Globe Life vs Primerica

Globe Life sells small no-exam life policies by mail, online and through exclusive agents; Primerica sells only term through its own representatives.

Verdict

Globe Life and Primerica are both publicly traded, both serve lower-middle and middle-income households, and both rely on exclusive sales forces. Their policies are very different. Globe Life writes a large number of small policies: about 14.3 million life policies in force at the end of 2025 with an average face amount of about $16,200, mostly whole life, sold direct to consumers by mail, online and phone and by exclusive agents of American Income Life, Liberty National and Family Heritage. Primerica sells term life only, with an average new policy face amount of about $252,900 in 2025, through its own representatives.

For a family that needs substantial income replacement, that difference matters. Globe Life's direct-channel term tops out at $100,000, with no medical exam; Primerica offers level terms of 10 to 35 years, a rapid-issue PowerTerm up to $300,000 and a traditionally underwritten PrecisionTerm. Globe Life also offers whole life, children's whole life and final expense coverage, which Primerica does not.

Both profiles disclose scrutiny. Globe Life was the subject of short-seller reports in April 2024. A Department of Justice investigation and an SEC inquiry were both closed in July 2025 without enforcement action, an internal board review found no merit to the fraud allegations, an EEOC reasonable-cause finding (which Globe Life disputed) was issued in September 2024, and a shareholder class action remains pending. Primerica responded in April 2024 to a short-seller report, calling it false. Ratings: Primerica A+ (Superior) from AM Best (February 2026); Globe Life A (Excellent) (November 2025) with AA- from S&P and Fitch. J.D. Power 2026: Primerica 8th of 23 (669), Globe Life 11th (656), both above the 649 average.

Choose Globe Life if

  • You want a small policy quickly, with no medical exam, by mail, online or from an in-home agent.
  • You want whole life, children's whole life or final expense coverage rather than term only.
  • You want AA- ratings from S&P and Fitch.
  • You are comfortable that regulatory inquiries closed without action in 2025 while a shareholder suit continues.

Choose Primerica if

  • You want a larger term policy, for 10 to 35 years, rather than a $100,000 direct term cap.
  • You want in-person help from a representative from your community.
  • You want an AM Best A+ (Superior) rating and the higher of the two J.D. Power 2026 scores.
  • You are happy with term only and plan to invest the difference elsewhere.

Before you decide

Decide first how much coverage you need (How much life insurance do I need?); small no-exam policies cost more per $1,000 than fully underwritten ones. Get quotes for the same amount from both and from an independent broker (how to compare life insurance quotes fairly), and note rating dates in AM Best, S&P, Moody's and Fitch ratings explained. mail-order and direct-response life insurance covers the trade-offs of mail and TV offers.
