Primerica vs Transamerica
Primerica sells only term through its own representatives; Transamerica adds IUL, whole life and final expense, sold largely through WFG agents.
Verdict
Primerica and Transamerica both target middle-income households and both sell mainly through large networks of agents, many of them part-time. The difference is how narrow each one is. Primerica sells term life only, through its own independent representatives, and follows a "buy term and invest the difference" approach. Transamerica, the U.S. arm of Aegon, sells term, indexed universal life, whole life and final expense coverage, and its most distinctive channel is World Financial Group (WFG), an Aegon-owned network of more than 95,000 licensed agents, alongside the Transamerica Agency Network and other independents.
On term, Primerica offers level periods of 10 to 35 years, a rapid-issue PowerTerm up to $300,000 and a traditionally underwritten PrecisionTerm. Transamerica's term is described through its Trendsetter Super and Trendsetter LB policies, with living benefit riders on some; the profile gives no term lengths. If you want permanent coverage, Primerica does not offer it, while Transamerica offers instant-decision indexed universal life ($50,000 to $500,000, ages 18 to 70) and final expense whole life up to $50,000.
Ratings favor Primerica on the published figures: AM Best A+ (Superior), affirmed February 2026, versus A (Excellent) for Transamerica as of December 2025. In the J.D. Power 2026 study, Primerica ranked 8th of 23 (669 points) and Transamerica 20th (602); the study average was 649. Primerica faced a short-seller report in April 2024 that the company called false. Transamerica agreed in 2025 to settle a universal life rate-increase class action, with settlements awaiting approval as of March 2026, and Aegon plans to relocate to the U.S. and rename itself Transamerica Inc. by 2028.

Before you decide
Ask a representative at each company for a written quote on the same coverage amount and term, and compare with a broker's quotes too (how to compare life insurance quotes fairly). Both are agent-driven, so captive vs independent life insurance agents helps you judge what you are getting. Check the conversion terms and rating dates (AM Best, S&P, Moody's and Fitch ratings explained). If a representative suggests an IUL, read IUL pros and cons: what the sales pitch leaves out first.
