Protective Life vs Prudential
Protective offers term to 40 years and guaranteed UL through agents; Prudential adds bigger term limits, online no-exam term and a better J.D. Power rank.
Verdict
Protective Life and Prudential are both shareholder-owned, large and rated in the A+ to AA- range, so the choice comes down to ownership, product mix and service. Protective is wholly owned by Japan's Daiichi Life Group (since 2015) and sells mainly through independent agents, brokers, banks and affinity partners. Prudential is a public U.S. company (NYSE: PRU) that sells through its own advisors, independent brokers and banks, and offers SimplyTerm directly online.
On term life, Protective's Classic Choice runs 10 to 40 years for $100,000 to $5 million, renewable to age 95. Prudential's EssentialTerm covers $100,000 to $65 million over 10, 15, 20 or 30 years and its profile highlights a conversion credit in years 2 to 7; it also sells one-year term and online SimplyTerm for $25,000 to $1 million. On permanent coverage, Protective leans toward guarantees (Lifetime Assurance guaranteed universal life, Dynamic Plus UL, variable UL and single premium whole life) and does not list indexed universal life. Prudential sells guaranteed UL, indexed UL, survivorship indexed UL, variable UL and an indexed variable UL (FlexGuard Life).
Ratings are close. Prudential's profile lists A+ (Superior) from AM Best as of August 2026 and AA- from S&P and Fitch, with Fitch's on Rating Watch Negative since May 2026. Protective shows A+ from AM Best as of September 2025 and AA- from S&P and Fitch. On service, Prudential ranked 5th of 23 in J.D. Power's 2026 study, above the study average, while Protective ranked 14th, below it. Both have grown through block deals: Protective by acquiring policy blocks, Prudential by buying The Hartford's life business in 2013 and later reinsuring blocks, so some owners find their policy serviced by one of them.
Choose Protective Life if
- You want 35- or 40-year level term, or term renewable to age 95.
- You want guaranteed universal life with level premiums and a return of premium endorsement.
- You prefer buying through an independent agent who can compare several insurers.
- You want single premium whole life for legacy planning, with the Estate Maximizer II option up to $225,000.
Choose Prudential if
- You need a very large term policy (up to $65 million) or a one-year renewable term.
- You want to buy a small term policy online with no exam (SimplyTerm, $25,000 to $1 million).
- You want indexed or survivorship indexed universal life.
- Service satisfaction matters, and you prefer Prudential's 5th-place J.D. Power 2026 result over Protective's 14th of 23.

Before you decide
Request quotes for identical coverage from each, ideally through an independent agent, using how to compare life insurance quotes fairly. Ask about conversion rules (converting term life to permanent: how the conversion option works) and confirm rating dates with AM Best, S&P, Moody's and Fitch ratings explained. If a policy has been reinsured or sold, when your life insurance policy is sold to another company explains what stays the same.
