Protective Life vs Securian Financial

Protective is a Japanese-owned term and guaranteed UL seller; Securian is a mutual holding company group focused on IUL, VUL and survivorship through advisors.

Verdict

Protective Life and Securian Financial are both sold through independent distribution and both carry strong ratings, but they are owned and built differently. Protective is wholly owned by Japan's Daiichi Life Group (since 2015) and has grown partly by acquiring other insurers' policy blocks. Securian is owned by a mutual holding company, Minnesota Mutual Companies, Inc., with no publicly traded stock, and is also a large writer of employer group life and coverage sold through banks, credit unions and lenders.

For individual coverage, Protective leads with term in lengths from 10 to 40 years, guaranteed universal life with level premiums, and a short list of other universal and whole life policies; it does not list indexed universal life. Securian's individual shelf leans toward advisor-sold cash value: indexed universal life (Eclipse), variable universal life (VUL Defender, Premier VUL), survivorship policies, and hybrid life with long-term care, plus term (its consumer page says generally 10 to 30 years). Securian's profile says it does not support buying individual policies directly online.

Ratings are both high. Protective: AM Best A+ (Superior) affirmed September 2025, S&P AA-, Fitch AA-, Moody's A1. Securian: AM Best A+ affirmed December 2025, S&P AA-, Fitch AA, Moody's Aa3. In the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Individual Life Insurance Study, Protective ranked 14th of 23 (636 points) and Securian 18th (615); both were below the 649 average. Variable products carry investment risk and are sold by prospectus, which Securian files publicly.

Choose Protective Life if

  • You want long level term (up to 40 years) or term renewable to age 95.
  • You want guaranteed universal life to lock in a death benefit at level premiums.
  • You prefer a shareholder-owned insurer with an agent-driven online term quote option.
  • You want an affordable single premium whole life for legacy planning (Estate Maximizer II, up to $225,000).

Choose Securian Financial if

  • You want indexed or variable universal life, or survivorship coverage for estate planning, through an advisor.
  • You value ownership by a mutual holding company rather than stock investors or a foreign parent.
  • You want a policy with chronic illness or long-term care benefits built in.
  • You may encounter Securian already through an employer plan or a loan and want one relationship.

Before you decide

Quote the same death benefit and term from each, and for permanent policies ask an advisor to show guarantees as well as illustrated values (how to compare life insurance quotes fairly). Understand who sells and services your policy with captive vs independent life insurance agents, and check rating dates with AM Best, S&P, Moody's and Fitch ratings explained.
