Protective Life vs Transamerica
Protective sells term to 40 years and guaranteed UL via independent agents; Transamerica leans on WFG agents, instant-decision IUL and final expense.
Verdict
Protective Life and Transamerica are both shareholder-owned and foreign-parented: Protective by Japan's Daiichi Life Group since 2015, Transamerica by Aegon, which plans to move its head office and legal seat to the United States and rename itself Transamerica Inc. by 2028. Both sell through agents rather than their own captive force, but the agents differ. Protective works through independent agents, brokers, banks and affinity partners. Transamerica's most distinctive channel is World Financial Group (WFG), an Aegon-owned network of more than 95,000 licensed agents, alongside the Transamerica Agency Network and other independents.
The product mix reflects the markets. Protective's profile centers on level term from 10 to 40 years, guaranteed universal life with level premiums, fixed and variable universal life and single premium whole life; it lists no indexed universal life. Transamerica targets middle-income households with term, indexed universal life, whole life and final expense, including instant-decision products: FE Express final expense up to $50,000 and FFIUL II Express indexed UL for $50,000 to $500,000 at ages 18 to 70. Protective's profile mentions an Estate Maximizer II single premium whole life with simplified approval up to $225,000.
Ratings differ. Protective's profile shows AM Best A+ (Superior) as of September 2025, with S&P and Fitch at AA-. Transamerica's shows A (Excellent) from AM Best as of December 2025 and A+ from S&P. In the J.D. Power 2026 study, Protective ranked 14th of 23 (636 points) and Transamerica 20th (602); both fell below the 649 average. Both have faced universal life litigation: Transamerica agreed in 2025 to settle a class action over rate increases in 2022 and 2023, with settlements awaiting approval as of March 2026.
