State Farm vs USAA Life Insurance Company
State Farm sells term and participating whole life through exclusive agents; USAA sells direct with military-focused riders and an A++ AM Best rating.
Verdict
State Farm and USAA Life Insurance Company are both life arms of large property and casualty groups owned by their policyholders or members, but they are sold very differently. State Farm sells only through State Farm agents, who represent the company exclusively, in every state except Massachusetts. USAA Life sells directly, online and by phone through licensed USAA representatives, to U.S. citizens nationwide; life insurance does not require USAA membership. Its policies are built around military life: coverage that continues in war, a Military Future Insurability rider to replace SGLI, and a severe-injury benefit.
Product shape differs. State Farm's whole life is participating, so it can earn dividends that are not guaranteed; the two life companies paid $924 million in dividends for 2025, a record. State Farm's term is Select Term in 10, 20 and 30 years plus return of premium term, and its term can be converted to permanent coverage regardless of health. USAA's Eagle Express term runs 10 to 30 years, $100,000 to $10 million, and some applicants qualify without an exam; its universal and indexed universal life are issued by John Hancock, not USAA.
Ratings and service: State Farm's AM Best rating was lowered to A+ (Superior) from A++ in November 2025, and it ranked 2nd of 23 in the J.D. Power 2026 study (692 points). USAA's AM Best A++ was affirmed in July 2025, with Moody's Aa1 and S&P AA listed by the company; USAA Life was not ranked by J.D. Power. State Farm faced a Missouri universal life cost-of-insurance class action with a $34.3 million jury verdict upheld on appeal.
