Overview
Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance is the marketing name of the insurance companies organized by Indiana Farm Bureau, Inc., based in downtown Indianapolis. Its property and casualty insurer is United Farm Family Mutual Insurance Company, and its life insurer is United Home Life Insurance Company. The group ranked #84 among U.S. life insurance groups by 2024 individual life direct premiums written, according to NAIC market share data, with about $181.5 million in premiums and a 0.12% market share.
The life business reaches customers two ways. In Indiana, more than 400 Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance agents in all 92 counties sell United Home Life's term, return of premium, whole life and final expense policies alongside auto, home, farm and business coverage. Separately, United Home Life sells its own line of simplified-issue and guaranteed-issue whole life, term and accidental death policies through independent agents, aimed at people who want coverage without medical exams. The group has about 1,200 employees and describes itself as the largest writer of farm insurance in Indiana.
History
Indiana Farm Bureau, Inc. established its insurance company on October 17, 1934, to give Hoosier farmers better insurance options, starting with farm coverage. The group added life insurance through United Farm Family Life Insurance Company (NAIC 69892), which held an A (Excellent) or higher AM Best rating for 64 consecutive years as of 2025, and through United Home Life, which lists its founding as 1948 and was long a subsidiary of United Farm Family Life.
For decades the two life companies split the work: United Farm Family Life wrote the policies sold by Farm Bureau agents in Indiana, and United Home Life wrote simplified-issue products sold by independent agents in other states. The group has since combined them. AM Best's June 2026 rating affirmation cited "the recent merger of two life entities into the remaining UHL", and the California Department of Insurance now lists United Farm Family Life's license status as merged. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance now names United Home Life as the provider of its life insurance products, and United Home Life carries forward the 65-year run of A or higher ratings. If your policy says United Farm Family Life, it is now a United Home Life policy; service and claims continue through the same Indianapolis office.
The group is a separate company from other states' Farm Bureau insurers, such as Farm Bureau Financial Services, COUNTRY Financial, Farm Bureau Insurance of Michigan and Tennessee Farmers Life.
Life insurance products
Sold by Indiana Farm Bureau agents:
- Term life: level term with a guaranteed level premium, or annual renewable term, whose premium rises each year. Term policies include a terminal illness benefit that lets you request virtually all of the death benefit if you are expected to live 12 months or less, and a guaranteed right to convert to permanent coverage without medical underwriting (see converting term life to permanent: how the conversion option works).
- Return of premium life: 20- or 30-year term with a level premium. At the end of the term you can surrender for your premiums back, take a reduced paid-up policy, keep the policy with annually rising premiums, or split the value between cash and paid-up coverage. See return of premium term life insurance: is it worth it.
- Whole life, including single premium whole life, a paid-up additions rider option with flexible premiums, chronic illness coverage that can accelerate up to 90% of the death benefit, a reduced paid-up option and terminal illness protection.
- Final expense: whole life from $5,000 to $25,000 with no medical exam, underwritten with a medical questionnaire, a prescription history review and a personal history interview; premiums are guaranteed not to rise. See final expense insurance: what it covers and costs.
Depending on age, amount and medical history, some applicants are approved without an exam, blood or urine test. Claim pages also mention waiver of premium, crisis care, health care and nursing home endorsement riders.
Sold by independent agents under the United Home Life name: simplified issue whole life and term in four underwriting tiers, answered with a few yes/no health questions; guaranteed issue whole life to age 100 with no health questions; whole life and term with an immediate full death benefit for insulin-dependent diabetics who otherwise qualify; and Protector AD accidental death coverage with one non-health question.
Other products
Indiana Farm Bureau agents sell fixed annuities (Certificate of Annuity V, Hoosier Plus III and Retirement Builder V) and traditional, Roth and spousal IRAs, along with auto, home, renters, farm and crop, business and umbrella insurance. Securities and mutual funds are offered through registered representatives of FBL Marketing Services, LLC, an unaffiliated broker-dealer, and members can also reach Farm Bureau Bank and Indiana Farm Bureau Health Plans.
Buying and service
In Indiana you buy through a local Farm Bureau agent or start a quote online and be routed to one. Indiana Farm Bureau membership gives access to the insurance: a primary membership cost $36 a year as of 2026 and includes a $2,000 accidental death benefit. Customer service is at 800-723-3276 or 317-692-7200, and policyholders can pay bills and manage policies through the My Account portal.
United Home Life policies sold by independent agents are serviced by the Life Contact Center at 800-428-3001 (8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Eastern, Monday to Friday) or by email at [email protected], with an online login for payments.
Claims
For Indiana Farm Bureau life and annuity policies, report a claim through the online form, your agent or 800-723-3276, available at any time. Have the insured's name, date of birth, date of death and cause of death ready. A claims representative is assigned and sends, by email or mail, the list of requirements to begin review, typically including a certified death certificate. United Home Life policies have their own online claim reporting form on unitedhomelife.com, and claimants can also call 800-428-3001. Our claims guide explains the general process.
Ratings and reputation
On June 1, 2026, the company announced that AM Best had affirmed United Home Life's A (Excellent) financial strength rating with a stable outlook, citing the merger of the two life companies, a strong capital position and a high-quality product mix. United Farm Family Mutual's A (Excellent) rating was affirmed for the sixth straight year even though it had its highest weather losses in company history. In May 2023 AM Best had upgraded United Home Life's ratings while affirming United Farm Family Life's. The companies do not publish S&P, Moody's or Fitch ratings, and neither brand was ranked in the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Individual Life Insurance Study.
Who it suits
Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance suits Indiana residents who want one local agent for their property and life insurance and a straightforward lineup: term, return of premium term, whole life and small final expense policies. United Home Life's independent-agent line suits people with health issues, including insulin-dependent diabetics, who want modest whole life without exams. It suits less well anyone outside Indiana looking for large term policies, anyone who wants to apply entirely online, or buyers looking for universal, indexed or variable life.
- Strengths: AM Best A (Excellent), affirmed June 2026, with more than six decades at A or higher; return of premium term and convertible term; guaranteed issue and diabetic-friendly whole life through United Home Life; agents in every Indiana county.
- Weaknesses: Farm Bureau agent products are for Indiana members only; rated a notch below the A+ ratings of some larger Farm Bureau insurers; no universal or indexed life; limited online buying and no ratings from S&P, Moody's or Fitch.
