Overview
John Hancock is the U.S. life insurance brand of Manulife Financial Corporation, the Toronto-based insurer listed on the New York and Toronto stock exchanges. Its main insurer is John Hancock Life Insurance Company (U.S.A.), based at 200 Berkeley Street in Boston and legally domiciled in Michigan. John Hancock Life Insurance Company of New York covers New York residents. The John Hancock group ranked #9 among U.S. life insurance groups by 2024 individual life direct premiums written, according to NAIC market share data, with $4.95 billion in premiums and a 3.17% market share.
John Hancock sells indexed universal life, variable universal life, term and a hybrid life and long-term care policy through licensed financial professionals. It is best known for John Hancock Vitality, a wellness program built into its policies that rewards exercise, healthy eating and checkups with premium savings and other perks. The company also runs retirement plan and investment management businesses under the John Hancock name.
History
John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company, founded in 1862 and long headquartered in Boston, was a policyholder-owned mutual until 2000. On February 1, 2000, it demutualized, converting to a stock company owned by the new John Hancock Financial Services, which went public the same day. As part of the conversion, a closed block was set up to protect dividend expectations on certain participating policies in force at that time.
Manulife agreed to buy John Hancock Financial Services in September 2003 and completed the merger on April 28, 2004. Manulife's existing U.S. insurer, The Manufacturers Life Insurance Company (U.S.A.), originally organized in Maine in 1955, took the John Hancock name and is today's main issuing company. Brooks Tingle is president and CEO of John Hancock.
In spring 2015 John Hancock began offering policies with Vitality, a behavioral wellness program. On September 19, 2018 it announced that all of its life insurance policies would come with Vitality, calling the move a departure from the traditional life insurance model. Manulife has also shed risk from older blocks through reinsurance. In early 2024 it reinsured four in-force blocks of legacy or low-return business with Global Atlantic, including what it called the largest long-term care reinsurance deal in history. In January 2025 it closed a deal with RGA covering a younger long-term care block and a legacy block of U.S. structured settlements. Unless policies are formally transferred to the reinsurer, the issuing company remains directly responsible to policyholders, so affected owners continue to deal with John Hancock.
Life insurance products
John Hancock's consumer site groups its coverage into term, permanent and hybrid products, all eligible for Vitality.
- Term life provides coverage for a set period; John Hancock's site gives 10, 15, 20 and 30 years as examples. On September 28, 2026, it announced an enhanced term suite with three options, ranging from lower-cost protection-focused coverage to versions with more flexibility to convert to permanent insurance.
- Indexed universal life: Protection IUL 26, announced in September 2026, adds optional guarantees to index-linked growth potential. See IUL pros and cons: what the sales pitch leaves out for how caps and charges affect results.
- Variable universal life: Protection VUL, updated in June 2026, invests cash value in market subaccounts. Its 2026 prospectus lists riders for long-term care, chronic illness, critical illness, disability premium payment and enhanced death benefit protection, plus Healthy Engagement riders that attach Vitality.
- LifeCare is a hybrid indexed universal life policy with guaranteed monthly long-term care benefits that can grow with the account value. Enhancements were announced in February 2026. It uses a fully digital application with no paramedical exam or lab tests, and John Hancock says many applicants get instant decisions and policies in under seven days.
- Aspire is life insurance with a Vitality-based program for people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, including diabetes coaching, virtual consults and testing supplies (life insurance with type 1 or type 2 diabetes).
Vitality. When the program went universal in 2018, Vitality GO came at no extra cost and Vitality PLUS cost $2 a month with savings of up to 15% on annual premiums. Members are rewarded for everyday steps such as exercising, eating well and getting regular checkups. In May 2025, John Hancock said nearly 90% of eligible members had earned premium savings. Benefits depend on staying engaged and on sharing activity and health data with the program (wearables and wellness programs in life insurance).
Other products
John Hancock's individual product menu no longer lists standalone long-term care insurance, but it still services a large block of older long-term care policies. Manulife's 2025 annual report describes premium increases on that in-force business. Separately, John Hancock offers life insurance with optional long-term care protection through employers, retirement plan services for 401(k) plans and mutual funds through John Hancock Investment Management.
Buying and service
You buy John Hancock coverage through a financial professional; the website's quote button connects you with an insurance professional rather than selling a policy directly. Policyowners can sign in online to manage coverage, pay premiums and start policy changes, and Vitality and Aspire have their own sign-ins.
For service, the life insurance service center (all states except New York) is at 800-387-2747, TTY 800-832-5282. New York policyholders call 888-267-7781, and Vitality members call 888-333-2659. Correspondence goes to Life Post Issue Services, John Hancock Insurance, P.O. Box 55979, Boston, MA 02205. Variable life prospectuses list a Service Office line, 800-732-5543.
Claims
John Hancock's site offers an online "manage a life claim" tool in its help center. Beneficiaries can also report a death through the life insurance service center at 800-387-2747 (888-267-7781 in New York) or the policyowner's financial professional. As with most insurers, expect to provide a certified death certificate and a claim form from each beneficiary. The guide how to file a life insurance claim covers the general process.
Ratings and reputation
As of January 31, 2026, Manulife reported these financial strength ratings for John Hancock Life Insurance Company (U.S.A.), all with stable outlooks: AA- from S&P, Aa3 from Moody's, AA from Fitch and A+ (Superior) from AM Best. Moody's raised its rating to Aa3 from A1 on September 19, 2025, citing improved profitability, strong capital and reduced exposure to legacy businesses.
Customer satisfaction is middling. In the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Individual Life Insurance Study, released in October 2026, John Hancock ranked 16th of 23 brands with 632 points, below the 649 study average (it was 15th in 2025).
Who it suits
John Hancock suits buyers who work with an advisor and want indexed or variable universal life, a hybrid policy with long-term care benefits, or coverage that rewards healthy habits with premium savings. Its Aspire program is built for people with diabetes. It suits people less well if they want to buy online without an agent, want the simplest possible policy, or don't want to share activity and health data for a wellness program.
- Strengths: Strong ratings (AA- S&P, Aa3 Moody's, AA Fitch, A+ AM Best); Vitality available with every policy, with premium savings for engaged Vitality PLUS members; LifeCare hybrid with no exam or labs; a large, publicly reporting parent.
- Weaknesses: Ranked 16th of 23 in J.D. Power's 2026 life study; no direct online purchase; Vitality savings require ongoing engagement and data sharing; a large legacy long-term care block that has seen premium increases.
