Overview

MassMutual's annuity business is larger than most people expect from a company known for whole life. Its NAIC group ranked #3 among U.S. groups by 2024 individual annuity direct premiums written, according to NAIC market share data, with $24.00 billion in premiums and a 5.69% market share.

Most of those premiums come from MassMutual Ascend Life Insurance Company, based at 191 Rosa Parks Street in Cincinnati, Ohio. Ascend is the former Great American Life Insurance Company, which MassMutual bought in 2021, and it owns a smaller annuity company, Annuity Investors Life Insurance Company. Ascend sells through independent agents, banks, broker-dealers and registered investment advisers. The parent company, Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company, also issues its own income and variable annuities, sold mainly through MassMutual's affiliated financial professionals. The MassMutual life insurance profile covers the parent's whole life, dividends, history and claims.

Ascend is known for fixed and fixed indexed annuities and for the advisory channel. It says LIMRA has ranked it No. 1 in advisory fixed indexed annuity sales for eight consecutive quarters, and in August 2026 it reported passing $2 billion in lifetime advisory annuity sales.

MassMutual Ascend's product pages, checked in October 2026, list four types:

  • Fixed annuities. Contracts credit a guaranteed rate for a set number of years. Money you put in is protected from loss unless you withdraw or surrender during the early withdrawal charge period. See fixed annuities: how they work, what they cost, who they suit and MYGAs.
  • Fixed indexed annuities. Interest is credited at the end of each term based partly on an index, and once credited it is locked in. In June 2026 Ascend added the Legacy Ascender rider, an optional death benefit rider with an annual charge that grows a separate benefit base used only to calculate the death benefit; it is not cash you can withdraw, and it is not offered in New York. See fixed indexed annuities: caps, participation rates and trade-offs.
  • Registered index-linked annuities. Ascend's RILA rate page lists Index Summit 6, Index Summit 6 Pro, Index Frontier 5 Plus and the fee-based Index Achiever Advisory, with older Index Frontier contracts still documented. A RILA gives partial protection, so you can lose principal when an index falls past the protection level. Each is sold by prospectus.
  • Immediate annuities. A single premium immediate annuity turns a lump sum into payments for life or a set period.

From the parent company:

No rates are listed here; they change often. The usual trade-offs apply: indexed and buffered contracts are complex and carry withdrawal charges for several years (annuity surrender charges and free withdrawals), and riders add cost in exchange for guarantees.

Ownership and reinsurance

MassMutual is a mutual owned by its participating policyowners, not by shareholders or a private-equity firm. MassMutual Ascend is a wholly owned subsidiary and calls itself an independent subsidiary that draws on MassMutual's investment capabilities and financial strength. Ascend says fixed income makes up about 80% of its invested assets and that it has paid more than $15 billion in guaranteed income benefits since 2000, including more than $1.5 billion in 2025.

Why this matters: ownership by a mutual means there is no outside owner seeking to extract returns from the annuity block, which some buyers prefer. Your contract is still a promise of the specific company that issued it, Ascend or MassMutual, so check which name is on your contract.

Financial strength

Ascend's ratings page shows A++ (Superior) from AM Best, affirmed October 23, 2025, and AA (Very Strong) from S&P, upgraded February 20, 2025. The parent, Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company, holds A++ (Superior) from AM Best, AA+ (Very Strong) from S&P and Fitch and Aa3 (High Quality) from Moody's as of October 2026, as listed in its life profile; those parent ratings apply to RetireEase Choice and Envision.

If an insurer fails, your state guaranty association covers annuity values up to a limit, commonly $250,000 per person per insurer, though limits vary. Check yours with the state guaranty association coverage lookup.

Who it suits

MassMutual's annuities suit buyers who want a fixed, indexed or buffered annuity backed by a top-rated mutual group, and fee-based advisory clients who want an annuity without a commission. RetireEase Choice suits someone who wants to lock in future lifetime income and can give up access to the money. They suit less well buyers who want to purchase directly, or anyone who may need the money before a withdrawal charge period ends.

  • Strengths: A++ from AM Best for both Ascend and the parent; mutual ownership with no private-equity owner; a large advisory annuity lineup; both accumulation and pure income annuities.
  • Weaknesses: Two issuing companies with separate service lines can confuse owners; Ascend's consumer pages do not name its fixed and indexed products; indexed, buffered and rider-based products are complex; a deferred income annuity cannot be cashed out.
