Overview
MassMutual, formally Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company, is a mutual insurer based in Springfield, Massachusetts. It has no stockholders; eligible participating policyowners share in its earnings through dividends. It ranked #3 among U.S. life insurance groups by 2024 individual life direct premiums written, according to NAIC market share data, with $8.71 billion, a 5.57% share.
The company describes itself as one of America's largest mutual life insurers, serving more than four million customers with over $1 trillion of life insurance in force and $584 billion of assets under management at the end of 2025. It sells mainly through financial professionals affiliated with the company, and is best known for participating whole life: its history page says LIMRA ranked it the No. 1 U.S. provider of whole life insurance in 2022. Besides the parent company, policies may be issued by its subsidiaries C.M. Life Insurance Company and MML Bay State Life Insurance Company, and annuities by MassMutual Ascend.
History
Insurance agent George W. Rice founded the company in Springfield in 1851 with $100,000 raised from 31 investors. After 16 profitable years it repaid those investors in 1867 and became a fully mutual company, and it says it has paid dividends to eligible participating policyowners every year since 1869. Dividends first topped $1 billion in a single year in 1999.
Recent decades brought several deals that shape the company today. In 2016 MassMutual acquired MetLife's retail advisor force, the MetLife Premier Client Group, greatly expanding its network of affiliated financial professionals. It grouped its institutional asset managers, including Babson Capital and Cornerstone, under the Barings brand. In 2021 it completed the acquisition of Great American Life Insurance Company, an annuity specialist renamed MassMutual Ascend. MassMutual passed $1 trillion of life insurance in force in 2023, and in 2026 it is marking its 175th anniversary. Besides the Springfield home office it has a large office at 10 Fan Pier Boulevard in Boston.
Life insurance products
MassMutual's consumer site lists four kinds of life insurance:
- Term life, with level premiums for a chosen period such as 10, 20 or 30 years. Term policies can be converted to permanent coverage, though the company notes that conversion periods and conditions vary by product.
- Whole life, participating and eligible for dividends, which can buy additional coverage or help pay premiums. Cash value grows on a guaranteed basis and can be borrowed against.
- Guaranteed universal life, permanent coverage built around a guaranteed death benefit rather than cash value, often used in estate planning (see guaranteed universal life: permanent coverage without the cash).
- Variable universal life, with flexible premiums and cash value invested in market subaccounts.
Buying usually involves a conversation with a financial professional, who reviews your finances and recommends coverage; the company says the purchase step "may require a medical exam." The contact page also lists separate service lines for guaranteed acceptance life and simplified whole life policies, small-face products handled outside the main agent channel. The site does not list indexed universal life among its consumer products.
Other products
MassMutual sells individual disability income insurance, a long-standing line it promotes alongside life coverage. Annuities are offered by MassMutual and by MassMutual Ascend, which has its own service line. Through MML Investors Services it also offers brokerage products such as mutual funds, 529 plans and IRAs. The contact page keeps service numbers for long-term care insurance, corporate- and bank-owned life insurance and executive group life.
Buying and service
Most individual policies are sold through a MassMutual financial professional; the website helps you find one but does not sell its main life products online. Existing customers manage life insurance, disability, annuity and brokerage accounts through the MassMutual dashboard (online account) and mobile app. The life insurance service line is 800-272-2216, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern.
Claims
Beneficiaries start a claim through the online claim tool on the claims page or by phone at 800-272-2216, and the company says a claim packet arrives within three business days. Completed forms, a certified death certificate and any other required documents go back by mail to Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company, DMS, 1295 State Street, Springfield, MA 01111-0001, by email to [email protected] or by fax to 866-329-4527. If there are several beneficiaries, each completes a claim form but only one certified death certificate is needed. MassMutual says an examiner begins reviewing a claim within two business days of receiving the packet and that the death benefit payment is processed within 10 business days of receiving all claim requirements. The general process is covered in how to file a life insurance claim.
Ratings and reputation
As of October 1, 2026, MassMutual's financial summary page lists these financial strength ratings, all with stable outlooks: AM Best A++ (Superior), Fitch AA+ (Very Strong), S&P Global AA+ (Very Strong) and Moody's Aa3 (High Quality). The ratings apply to MassMutual and its subsidiaries C.M. Life and MML Bay State. They are very strong, though Fitch and Moody's place MassMutual a notch or more below Northwestern Mutual and New York Life. The annuity subsidiary MassMutual Ascend Life is rated separately: its website shows A++ (Superior) from AM Best, affirmed October 23, 2025, and AA (Very Strong) from S&P, upgraded February 20, 2025 (see MassMutual).
In 2025 MassMutual announced a record estimated $2.9 billion dividend payout to eligible participating policyowners for 2026. Dividends are not guaranteed.
In the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Individual Life Insurance Study, released in October 2026, MassMutual tied with Principal for 6th of 23 brands with 671 points, above the study average of 649 (it was 6th of 22 in 2025).
Who it suits
MassMutual suits buyers who want dividend-paying whole life, guaranteed universal life for estate planning or individual disability income insurance, and who are comfortable working with a financial professional. It is a less natural fit for someone who wants to compare and buy term coverage online, or who wants indexed universal life. Shoppers weighing large mutuals often compare it with Northwestern Mutual, New York Life and Guardian Life.
- Strengths: A++ from AM Best and AA+ from S&P and Fitch (as of October 2026); a record $2.9 billion dividend payout announced for 2026; term lengths up to 30 years; published claim timelines.
- Weaknesses: Main products sold through financial professionals, not online; Moody's rating (Aa3) below the top mutual peers; no indexed universal life on its consumer site; several subsidiaries and service lines can make it harder to know who services a given policy.
