Overview
Guardian Life is one of the oldest and largest mutual life insurers in the United States. The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America has no shareholders; it is owned by its participating policyholders, and its profits go back to them as dividends or stay in the company as capital. It ranked #11 among U.S. life insurance groups by 2024 individual life direct premiums written, according to NAIC market share data, with $4.29 billion in premiums and a 2.75% share.
Guardian is known for participating whole life insurance and for individual disability income insurance, and it also sells term, universal and variable universal life. Most individual policies are sold through Guardian-affiliated financial professionals: the company reports more than 2,700 advisors and about 7,700 employees. It is also a large employee-benefits carrier, selling group life, disability, dental and vision coverage through employers.
For 2025, Guardian reported a record $2.5 billion in operating income, $13.5 billion in premiums, $12.6 billion of total capital and $93.8 billion of admitted assets. It is based at 10 Hudson Yards in New York City and is led by chairman and CEO Andrew McMahon.
History
Guardian began on July 17, 1860, when it issued its first policy. The company was organized at Delmonico's restaurant in Manhattan by a group of 21 German American businessmen led by Hugo Wesendonck, and was originally named the Germania Life Insurance Company of America. Guardian has paid a dividend to eligible policyholders every year since 1868.
During World War I, amid anti-German sentiment, the company renamed itself The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America in 1918. In 1925 it converted from a mixed stock-and-mutual structure into a mutual wholly owned by its policyholders, which it remains today.
Guardian entered the employee benefits market in 1957. In 2001 it completed a merger with Berkshire Life Insurance Company of America of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, which still underwrites much of Guardian's individual disability income business. It bought absence-management firm ReedGroup in 2013, dental insurer Premier Access in 2014 and Avēsis, a vision, dental and hearing benefits provider, in 2016. Guardian Direct, a digital sales platform, launched in 2018.
Two recent deals changed how parts of the company are run. In November 2022, Guardian's annuity subsidiary ceded virtually all of its roughly $7 billion block of variable annuities to Talcott Resolution (now Talcott Financial Group) through reinsurance, with Talcott to take over administration of that block. In July 2025, Guardian closed a partnership with Janus Henderson, which now manages the roughly $45 billion investment-grade public fixed income portfolio of Guardian's general account; Guardian also formed a strategic partnership with private markets firm Hamilton Lane.
Life insurance products
Term life. Guardian sells level term life insurance with terms of up to 30 years. All Guardian level term policies can be converted to permanent whole life without a new medical exam during the first five years; an optional Extended Conversion Rider extends that right for the full term. Guardian offers instant online term quotes, but its site directs buyers to a financial professional to complete a purchase. Riders for term include Waiver of Premium, Waiver Plus (which also waives the first whole life premium after conversion at the end of the level term while you are disabled), accelerated terminal illness benefits, accidental death and a Charitable Benefit rider that adds 1% of the death benefit, up to $100,000, for a charity of your choice at no extra premium.
Whole life. Guardian's main product is participating whole life: fixed premiums, a guaranteed death benefit, guaranteed cash value growth and eligibility for non-guaranteed annual dividends. Dividends can be used to buy paid-up additions riders explained. Whole life riders include waiver of premium, an accelerated benefit for terminal and chronic illness at no additional premium, a guaranteed insurability rider with up to eight option dates to buy more coverage without new evidence of insurability, accidental death, a 10-year renewable term rider and a combined disability income and waiver of premium rider. Guardian notes that some of its whole life policies have no cash value in the first two years and do not pay a dividend until the third policy year.
Index Participation Feature. On select participating whole life policies, owners can allocate 0% to 100% of the cash value of paid-up additions to the Index Participation Feature, which adjusts the dividend up or down based on the S&P 500 price return index, subject to a cap (10.5%) and floor (4%) that Guardian described as current in early 2026.
Universal and variable universal life. Guardian also sells universal life, with flexible premiums, and Variable universal life (VUL) insurance, a securities product sold by prospectus through Park Avenue Securities, Guardian's broker-dealer. VUL has no guaranteed interest rate and can lapse if investments perform poorly or the policy is underfunded.
Other products
Guardian sells individual disability income insurance (much of it issued by Berkshire Life), dental, vision, accident and critical illness coverage, and group benefits through employers. Fixed, fixed index, registered index-linked and variable annuities are issued by The Guardian Insurance & Annuity Company (GIAC), a Delaware subsidiary. Owners of older Guardian variable annuities may find their contract administered by Talcott under the 2022 reinsurance agreement.
Buying and service
Individual life insurance is sold through Guardian financial professionals and through brokers; Guardian's website has a tool to find an advisor and an online term quote. Group life, disability and dental coverage are bought through employers. Policyholders can manage individual policies through Guardian's online customer account. General customer support is at 888-482-7342 (1-888-GUARDIAN), Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern. Guardian also has service offices in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; Holmdel, New Jersey; and Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
Claims
To report a death on an individual Guardian life policy, beneficiaries can call 866-452-4542 (option 2 for life claims) or report the claim online through Guardian's customer access site, which Guardian says takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Paper claims and documents go to The Guardian Life Insurance Co. of America, P.O. Box 981590, El Paso, TX 79998-1590. Expect to need a certified death certificate and a claimant statement; our how to file a life insurance claim guide covers the usual steps. Group life claims under an employer plan use a separate process that starts with the employer.
Ratings and reputation
In the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Individual Life Insurance Study, released in October 2026, which measures customer satisfaction with buying and owning a policy, Guardian ranked 4th of 23 brands with 675 points against a study average of 649, the same position as in 2025.
Guardian holds some of the highest financial strength ratings in the industry. AM Best affirmed its A++ (Superior) rating, with a stable outlook, in September 2025, covering Guardian Life and its core subsidiaries GIAC and Berkshire Life. Guardian reported ratings of Aa1 (High Quality) from Moody's and AA+ (Very Strong) from S&P in its 2025 annual results, released in April 2026.
For 2026, Guardian's board allocated a record $1.7 billion in dividends to participating policyholders, up 9% from 2025, and set the dividend interest rate at 6.25%. Dividends are not guaranteed and are declared each year by the board.
In March 2015, Guardian entered a $2 million multistate regulatory settlement, led by New Hampshire, that came out of examinations of how large insurers searched for deceased policyholders. Guardian agreed to regularly match its in-force life policies and annuities against the Social Security Death Master File.
Who it suits
Guardian suits buyers who want a long-term relationship with an advisor and value guaranteed whole life cash values plus a history of dividends from a highly rated mutual. It is also one of the main names in individual disability income insurance. It suits less well people who only want inexpensive term coverage bought quickly online, or who prefer to compare many carriers through an independent agent.
- Strengths: A++ (AM Best), Aa1 (Moody's) and AA+ (S&P) ratings; dividends paid every year since 1868 and a record $1.7 billion allocation for 2026; term conversion included for five years, extendable for the full term by rider; strong disability income line through Berkshire Life.
- Weaknesses: Individual policies are generally bought through a financial professional rather than fully online; whole life premiums are much higher than term and early cash values can be low; dividends and the Index Participation Feature cap and floor are not guaranteed; older variable annuities were reinsured to Talcott in 2022.
