Overview
Northwestern Mutual is a Milwaukee-based mutual life insurer: it has no stockholders and is owned by its policyowners, who share in its profits through annual dividends. It ranked #1 among U.S. life insurance groups by 2024 individual life direct premiums written, according to NAIC market share data, with $13.66 billion, an 8.74% share of the market.
The company sells only through its own network of financial advisors (its site cites more than 8,000 financial advisors and professionals). There is no way to buy a policy online. Its core product is participating whole life, usually sold as part of a broader financial plan that can include investments, disability insurance and long-term care coverage. In its 2025 annual report the company said it paid $5.8 billion in claims in 2025, ended the year with a record surplus of more than $42 billion and had nearly $2.5 trillion of life insurance in force.
History
General John C. Johnston, a retired New York life insurance agent who had moved to a farm near Janesville, Wisconsin, incorporated the Mutual Life Insurance Company of the State of Wisconsin in Janesville in 1857. The company struggled to raise capital and did not issue its first policy, to Johnston himself, until late 1858. It moved to Milwaukee in 1859 and took the name The Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company in 1865, according to the Encyclopedia of Milwaukee. The company says it has paid dividends every year since 1872.
Northwestern Mutual has stayed a mutual throughout its history, unlike several large peers that demutualized. Its biggest detour outside insurance was investment manager Frank Russell Company, bought in 1999 for $1.2 billion and sold to London Stock Exchange Group in 2014 for $2.7 billion. Long-term care insurance is issued by a subsidiary, Northwestern Long Term Care Insurance Company, and brokerage and advisory services run through Northwestern Mutual Investment Services and Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management Company.
Tim Gerend, who previously ran the company's advisor network, succeeded longtime chief executive John Schlifske as CEO effective January 1, 2025.
Life insurance products
Term life comes in two styles. Annual renewable policies (Term 10 and Term 80, which can run to age 80) start cheaper but the premium rises every year; level-premium policies (Level Term 20, and Level Term 10, which covers 20 years with a premium increase after the first 10) keep the price fixed. The site does not list a 30-year level term. Term policyowners can convert some or all of their coverage to whole life without new health questions. Applicants answer health and lifestyle questions as part of underwriting, arranged through the advisor.
Permanent coverage includes:
- Whole life, with guaranteed cash value growth and non-guaranteed dividends that most owners use to buy paid-up additions riders explained.
- Survivorship whole life, which covers two people and pays at the second death, used in estate planning.
- Universal life, with flexible premiums and death benefit.
- Variable universal life, where the cash value is invested in market subaccounts and can lose value.
The company does not list indexed universal life, final expense or guaranteed-issue policies on its site. Its most promoted riders are waiver of premium on total disability, an additional purchase benefit that lets the owner buy more coverage at set ages or life events without proving health, and long-term care benefit riders that let the insured draw part of the death benefit early for qualifying care.
Other products
Northwestern Mutual is a major seller of individual disability income insurance, including policies for doctors and dentists, and says it ranked #1 in individual disability income and #3 in individual long-term care insurance by premiums at the end of 2024. It also sells income, fixed and variable annuities, and offers brokerage, advisory, trust and private wealth management services.
Buying and service
Every sale goes through an advisor, who gathers financial details and recommends coverage; the company's term page says the best way to get an accurate quote is to talk to an advisor. That suits people who want ongoing advice, but advisors are paid on what they sell and offer only Northwestern Mutual policies, so some buyers check a recommendation against quotes from other insurers (see captive vs independent life insurance agents).
Policyowners can use the online account or mobile app to view policy and investment details, add beneficiaries, make payments and sign up for electronic delivery of documents. General questions go to the service line at 866-950-4644, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Central time.
Claims
Beneficiaries can report a death through the online form at northwesternmutual.com/report-a-death or with help from the deceased's advisor. Documents such as a death certificate or a funeral home assignment can be emailed to [email protected], and questions go to client services at 800-635-8855. The claims page also links to a beneficiary checklist and to separate disability and long-term care claim processes. If you cannot find a policy, the company says to call 800-388-8123 for copies of lost life, disability or long-term care policy documents. The general steps are covered in how to file a life insurance claim.
Ratings and reputation
Northwestern Mutual holds the highest financial strength ratings available to a U.S. life insurer from all four major agencies, per its 2025 annual report: AM Best A++ (Superior), as of November 2025; Fitch AAA (Exceptionally Strong), as of June 2026; Moody's Aa1, as of August 2026; and S&P Global AA+, as of May 2026. Moody's and S&P cap U.S. insurers at their rating of the U.S. government, which is why those two are one notch below the top of the scale. See AM Best, S&P, Moody's and Fitch ratings explained for what the letters mean.
In October 2025 the company announced an expected 2026 dividend payout of $9.2 billion, about $1 billion more than in 2025, with close to $7.9 billion going to whole life policyowners. Dividends are not guaranteed and are reviewed every year.
In the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Individual Life Insurance Study, released in October 2026, Northwestern Mutual ranked 10th of 23 brands with 659 points, above the study average of 649 but down from 5th in 2025.
In 2023 New Hampshire regulators settled two cases over the supervision of its agents, after finding that agents had sent tens of thousands of emails between 2019 and 2021 that misrepresented their experience and client base, some into states where they were not licensed. Northwestern Mutual paid a $200,000 fine to the New Hampshire Insurance Department, and its broker-dealer paid $175,000 plus $25,000 in investigative costs to the state securities bureau, ThinkAdvisor reported.
Who it suits
Northwestern Mutual fits people who want a long-term relationship with one advisor, value top financial strength ratings and want participating whole life from the company that pays the industry's largest dividends. It fits less well for someone who simply wants the cheapest term policy, a 30-year level term, or the convenience of applying online, and its advisor-only model means the advice comes from someone who sells only Northwestern Mutual products. Compare it with other large mutuals such as New York Life and MassMutual.
- Strengths: Top-tier ratings from all four agencies (2025–2026); an expected $9.2 billion dividend payout in 2026; term coverage convertible to whole life without new health questions; above-average customer satisfaction in J.D. Power's 2026 study.
- Weaknesses: No online quotes or purchase; level-premium term tops out at 20 years; no indexed universal life or final expense products; a 2023 New Hampshire fine over agent emails.
