Overview
Haven Life was MassMutual's online life insurance agency, launched in 2015 to sell term life insurance directly to consumers through a digital application. It was one of the first large insurer-backed online brands, and its policies were issued by MassMutual companies rather than outside carriers.
Haven Life no longer sells. In late December 2023, trade publication Coverager reported that Haven Life had emailed customers to say it had stopped accepting new applications and that all accounts would move to MassMutual "in the coming months." Policygenius gives January 3, 2024, as the date applications stopped; ValuePenguin reported January 12, 2024, and said no new policies would be issued after March 31, 2024. Press coverage at the time attributed MassMutual's decision to low customer adoption and high customer acquisition costs. The havenlife.com website was offline when we checked in October 2026.
Who issues the policy
Haven Life was the agency; the insurers were MassMutual companies. When it closed, Haven Life's site told customers there was no change to existing policies, which are issued by either Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company or its subsidiary C.M. Life Insurance Company and continue to be administered and serviced by MassMutual. Your policy schedule names which one issued yours.
That matters for claims: the issuer, not the closed agency, owes the death benefit, and the closing of Haven Life did not change what the insurer owes. As of October 1, 2026, MassMutual's financial summary page lists an AM Best rating of A++ (Superior) that applies to MassMutual and C.M. Life, according to our MassMutual profile.
How buying works
New applications are not available. MassMutual sells its own life insurance mainly through financial professionals rather than online. If you need new coverage, compare current online agencies, brokers and insurers' direct brands; see buying life insurance online: how instant decisions work and online life insurance companies and agencies explained.
If you own a Haven policy, keep paying premiums on schedule. Premium amounts, the death benefit, the term and any conversion privilege are set by your contract and did not change because Haven Life closed.
Products and limits
Haven Life sold two term products, as described by Policygenius:
- Haven Term: traditional, fully underwritten term for ages 20 to 64, in 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30-year terms, up to $3 million. Some applicants qualified without a medical exam.
- Haven Simple: no-exam term for ages 20 to 55, in 5, 10, 15 or 20-year terms, with lower limits; not offered in Delaware, North Dakota, South Dakota or New York.
Haven also bundled a package of extras called Haven Life Plus with some policies. Those were services, not insurance benefits, and may not continue in the same form under MassMutual.
Reputation
Haven Life's closing was a business decision by MassMutual, not a regulatory action or insolvency. We found no published regulatory enforcement action against Haven Life Insurance Agency in sources searched in October 2026. The relevant measure of security for existing policies is MassMutual's financial strength, rated A++ (Superior) by AM Best as of October 2026.
Who it suits
This page is for current Haven policyholders and their beneficiaries. Your coverage stays in force as long as premiums are paid, and a mutual insurer with top-tier ratings remains behind it.
- Strengths for existing customers: issued and serviced by MassMutual, one of the most highly rated U.S. life insurers; contract terms unchanged; MassMutual's regular customer service and claims teams handle policies.
- Weaknesses: no new policies; the Haven website and brand are gone, which can confuse beneficiaries; some digital extras from Haven Life Plus may no longer be offered.
Make sure your beneficiaries know the policy is with MassMutual or C.M. Life, not "Haven Life," and keep a copy where they can find it. Term policies often let you convert to permanent coverage without new medical questions before a deadline; if your health has changed, check your contract's conversion terms with MassMutual. See converting term life to permanent: how the conversion option works.
How to contact Haven Life
Haven Life no longer has its own service line. MassMutual's life insurance service and claims line is 800-272-2216, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern, and policies can be managed through the MassMutual online dashboard. Beneficiaries can start a claim online or by phone at the same number; MassMutual's process is covered in our claims guide.
