Overview
Ethos is an online life insurance agency founded in 2016 by Peter Colis and Lingke Wang. It sells policies from several insurance companies through a single online application that promises an instant decision without a medical exam. Ethos is not an insurer. Its licensing page says Ethos Technologies Inc. holds both producer (agency) licenses and third-party administrator licenses, which lets it sell the policy and also handle some of the paperwork while the policy is in force.
Ethos became a public company when its shares began trading on Nasdaq under the ticker LIFE on January 29, 2026. Renaissance Capital reported that the IPO priced at $19 a share, the middle of its expected range. Besides life insurance, Ethos now markets annuities and an online wills and trusts service.
Who issues the policy
Ethos's carriers page names the companies that issue the policies it sells (checked October 2026):
| Issuer | What Ethos sells from it |
|---|---|
| Banner Life (formerly Legal & General America) | Fully underwritten and simplified issue term |
| Protective Life | Term sold direct to consumers (not in New York) |
| CMFG Life and MEMBERS Life (TruStage) | No-exam term and whole life |
| Ameritas | Ethos Term Life Choice, simplified term without exams (not in New York) |
| North American Company for Life and Health (Sammons Financial Group) | Indexed universal life with an instant decision |
This matters because the issuing insurer, not Ethos, owns the risk and pays the death claim. The insurer's financial strength is what stands behind the promise. Per AM Best as recorded in our insurer profiles: Banner Life A (Excellent, March 2026), Protective A+ (Superior, October 2026), CMFG Life A (Excellent, December 2025), Ameritas A (Excellent, June 2026) and North American A+ (Superior, September 2026). Your policy documents will name the issuer; check it before you sign, because two people applying through Ethos on the same day can end up with policies from different companies.
How buying works
You apply entirely online. Ethos asks for identity details, including a driver's license and Social Security number, and health and prescription history so it can make a decision without an exam. This is a form of accelerated underwriting: approval without an exam: the data checks replace the blood and urine tests of a traditional application for most applicants. Ethos says many customers get same-day coverage and can be covered "in as little as 10 minutes."
Before coverage is issued, Ethos shows the coverage amount and premium it is offering. You accept by signing electronically. If you are not offered the coverage you applied for, or the price changes, you can walk away without penalty. Every policy has a 30-day free-look period, during which you can cancel for a full refund, subject to policy terms. Ethos's site also says an approved offer can be accepted any time within 30 days as long as your information has not changed.
Products and limits
- Term life: Ethos says term is available to applicants 69 or younger, in terms of 10 to 30 years. Its home page advertises up to $3 million of coverage; its older term product page lists $100,000 to $1 million, so the ceiling depends on the issuer and your profile.
- Guaranteed issue whole life: for applicants 66 to 85, with approval after a few simple questions. As with most guaranteed issue life insurance: no health questions, with limits, expect small face amounts aimed at final expenses and a graded death benefits: why the first two years matter during the first years.
- Indexed universal life: issued by North American, with an instant decision.
- Annuities and wills: Ethos sells annuities through a separate phone team and offers a free will with some policies (not available in every state).
Ethos is licensed in 49 states and Washington, D.C. It does not sell in New York, and some carriers' products are not available in every state.
Reputation
We found no published regulatory enforcement action or lawsuit against Ethos as a platform in public sources checked in October 2026. As a public company, Ethos now files annual and quarterly reports that disclose material legal proceedings. For claims-paying strength, look at the issuing insurer's ratings above, not at Ethos. We do not repeat review-site star ratings.
Who it suits
Ethos suits healthy adults who want a few hundred thousand dollars to a few million dollars of term coverage quickly and would rather not schedule an exam. Its guaranteed issue whole life gives older applicants with health problems a fallback, at a high cost per dollar of coverage. People with complicated health histories may get better pricing from fully underwritten policies through an independent broker who can shop more carriers; see how to compare life insurance quotes fairly and captive vs independent life insurance agents.
- Strengths: no-exam application with an instant decision; several established issuers rated A or higher by AM Best; licensing disclosed state by state; 30-day free look.
- Weaknesses: not available in New York; you do not choose the issuer directly; a smaller carrier panel than large brokerages; no-exam pricing can be higher than fully underwritten pricing for very healthy applicants.
