Overview
Policygenius is an online insurance brokerage and quote marketplace based in New York. Since 2014 it has published consumer guides and let shoppers compare life, disability, home and auto insurance quotes from several insurers at once, with licensed agents available by phone. Its site says it has sold more than $200 billion of life coverage.
Policygenius describes itself as "an independent insurance broker": it is paid a commission by the insurer on each sale, and the commission is already built into the premium, so using it adds no fee. It says its compensation can vary by product, insurer and sales volume, and that it will tell you the commission on a specific policy if you ask.
On April 25, 2023, Zinnia, a life and annuity technology and services company that was then part of Eldridge, announced it would acquire Policygenius and keep the Policygenius brand. KKR, which had led Policygenius's earlier funding, stayed on as an investor. Policygenius's own pages say it is not owned by an insurance company and does not own one.
Who issues the policy
Policygenius never issues policies. Every policy you buy through it is issued by one of the insurers in its marketplace, and that insurer pays the claim. Its disclosures page (checked October 2026) names the carriers used in its rate examples: Corebridge Financial, Foresters Financial, Legal & General America (Banner Life), Lincoln Financial, Mutual of Omaha, Pacific Life, Principal Financial Group, Protective Life, Prudential, SBLI, Symetra and Transamerica. Not every carrier is available in every state.
Because the choice of insurer is yours, compare the issuer's financial strength, policy features (such as conversion rights) and price, not only the premium. Our insurer profiles give each company's dated AM Best rating. A broker that shows several insurers side by side makes this easier than a platform that assigns you an issuer.
How buying works
You enter basic details and see quotes from several insurers. After you pick one, Policygenius submits the application to that insurer and an agent stays involved through underwriting. What happens next depends on the insurer and your profile:
- No-exam approval: Policygenius's disclosures say issuing a term or final expense policy without a medical exam depends on product availability, your eligibility and your truthful answers to a health questionnaire. Insurers that use accelerated underwriting: approval without an exam check prescription, driving and other records.
- Traditional underwriting: Others require a phone interview, a paramedical exam with blood and urine samples, and sometimes medical records, which can take weeks.
You pay premiums to the insurer, not Policygenius. The free-look period is set by the insurer's policy and your state's law, typically 10 to 30 days.
Products and limits
Policygenius shows term, whole life, no-exam and guaranteed universal life policies, plus final expense coverage, disability insurance and home and auto insurance. Coverage amounts, ages and term lengths are whatever each insurer offers. For example, Policygenius's no-exam guide says Banner Life accepts applicants 20 to 60 for $100,000 to $2 million through a phone interview, and Protective's Lifetime Assurance guaranteed universal life goes up to $1 million without an exam for ages 18 to 45. Because Policygenius is licensed in every state, including New York, it can offer New York residents policies from insurers' New York companies.
Policygenius's disclosures publish a dated example: the estimated 70.16% gap between the highest and lowest monthly premiums for a $500,000, 20-year term policy for a 40-year-old male rated Preferred Plus, as of May 5, 2025. That figure is Policygenius's own illustration of how much prices vary between insurers, not a price.
Reputation
We found no published regulatory enforcement action or lawsuit against Policygenius in sources searched in October 2026. Policygenius publishes insurer rankings and reviews of the companies it sells, which is a built-in conflict of interest worth keeping in mind; it says commissions do not affect its recommendations. Claims-paying strength depends on the insurer you choose; check its rating in our profile before you buy.
Who it suits
Policygenius suits shoppers who want to see several insurers' prices side by side and would like a licensed agent to walk them through a traditional application, including people with health conditions who may get a better rate with full underwriting than with an instant-decision product. It is less suited to someone who wants coverage in a single online session with no phone calls; expect follow-up from an agent. See how to compare life insurance quotes fairly for how to compare offers fairly.
- Strengths: many insurers to compare; licensed in all states including New York; agents help with underwriting; licensing and rate-example methodology published; you choose the issuer.
- Weaknesses: commission-paid, so it only shows insurers it has contracts with; traditional applications can take weeks; agent phone and email follow-up; product details vary by insurer.
