Overview
Symetra is a life insurance, retirement and employee benefits company headquartered in Bellevue, Washington. Its main insurer, Symetra Life Insurance Company, is domiciled in Iowa and licensed in every state except New York, plus Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico. New York residents are served by First Symetra National Life Insurance Company of New York. All of the companies belong to Symetra Financial Corporation, which since 2016 has been wholly owned by Sumitomo Life Insurance Company, one of Japan's largest life insurers and a policyholder-owned mutual.
The NAIC files the group under its Japanese parent. Sumitomo Life's U.S. group ranked #37 among U.S. life insurance groups by 2024 individual life direct premiums written, according to NAIC market share data, with about $918.0 million in premiums and a 0.59% market share. Symetra reported liabilities of $65.8 billion and stockholder's equity of $2.6 billion at the end of 2024.
Symetra has no agents of its own. It sells through what its SEC filings describe as a national network of financial institutions, broker-dealers, financial professionals, independent agents and benefits consultants. In life insurance it is known for SwiftTerm, a term policy that can be issued online in minutes, and for Indexed universal life (IUL) explained policies with living-benefit riders.
History
Symetra Life Insurance Company was incorporated under Washington law in 1957 and for decades was the life insurance arm of Seattle-based Safeco Corporation, operating as Safeco Life. In 2004 Safeco sold its life and investment businesses to a group of investors led by White Mountains Insurance Group and Berkshire Hathaway, and the company took the Symetra name. Symetra Financial went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 2010.
On August 11, 2015, Sumitomo Life agreed to buy Symetra for about $3.8 billion. The Iowa Insurance Division approved the change of control on December 30, 2015, and the purchase closed in early 2016, ending Symetra's time as a listed company. Berkshire Hathaway and White Mountains, which held about 17% and 18% of the shares, supported the sale. In 2022 Symetra set up a Bermuda reinsurance affiliate, Symetra Bermuda Re.
The company has grown in employee benefits through acquisitions. On October 1, 2025, Symetra closed its acquisition, through reinsurance, of the group and individual life, AD&D, disability, paid leave and absence management business of Dearborn Group, a subsidiary of Health Care Service Corporation. The deal added about 2.5 million covered lives and nearly 450 employees and came with a multi-year agreement to sell Symetra's life and disability products to HCSC's health insurance customers. Symetra's medical stop-loss business marked its 50th year in 2026.
Life insurance products
Symetra's current individual life lineup, as described on its website:
- SwiftTerm: level term life insurance for 10, 15, 20 or 30 years, $100,000 to $5 million, issue ages 20 to 60 (30-year terms to 55 for non-nicotine users and 50 for nicotine users). An agent starts the application and you finish it online. Symetra says most applicants are approved on the spot or within three days; some get coverage in as little as 18 minutes, others go through accelerated underwriting: approval without an exam (one to three days) or full underwriting with an exam (up to 30 days). After the level period the policy renews at annually increasing premiums until age 95. It includes a terminal illness accelerated death benefit of up to 75% of the death benefit ($500,000 maximum) and grief and estate-settlement help for beneficiaries through a partner, Empathy. Optional riders include accidental death (up to $250,000), children's term ($1,000 to $10,000 per child), waiver of premium and a conversion enhancement rider.
- Symetra Term: a traditionally underwritten term policy for ages 20 to 80, starting at $250,000.
- Accumulator Ascent IUL: indexed universal life designed for cash value growth and income, issue ages 20 to 85, minimum $100,000.
- Protector IUL: indexed universal life aimed at guaranteed death benefit protection, issue ages 20 to 85, minimum $100,000.
- SwiftProtector: an indexed universal life policy bought through an online process, ages 20 to 60, $100,000 to $3 million.
- Accumulator VUL: Variable universal life (VUL) insurance with market-based subaccounts, issue ages 0 to 85, minimum $100,000, sold through Symetra Securities.
The permanent policies include overloan lapse protection and accelerated death benefit riders for terminal and chronic illness. A Chronic Care Advantage rider lets owners choose to access 50% or 100% of the death benefit after a qualifying illness. Cancer Care Compass, optional on the IULs, combines a cash cancer benefit with a one-time Galleri multi-cancer early detection test for insureds 50 to 89, nutrition guidance and health advocacy services. Symetra does not sell whole life or final expense insurance.
Other products
Most of Symetra's business is outside individual life. It sells fixed, fixed indexed and income annuities, the Trek line of registered index-linked annuities, and structured settlement annuities. Its benefits division offers group life and disability, group supplemental health, paid family and medical leave and medical stop-loss coverage for self-funded employers.
Buying and service
You buy Symetra life insurance through an insurance professional. The website has no public quote engine, but it can connect shoppers without an agent to one of its partners, and SwiftTerm and SwiftProtector applications are completed online after an agent starts them. SwiftTerm owners have a separate online account for payments, changes and claims; other policyholders use Symetra's My Account portal. Customer service and claims are reached at 800-796-3872 (1-800-SYMETRA), Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Pacific time.
Claims
Beneficiaries can start a life claim by calling 800-796-3872, through the SwiftTerm online account for that product, or by writing to Symetra at P.O. Box 34690, Seattle, WA 98124-1690. Symetra's site does not publish a list of required documents or payout times; expect to send a certified death certificate and a claimant statement. Our claims guide covers the usual steps. SwiftTerm beneficiaries also get access to grief and estate-settlement support through Empathy.
Ratings and reputation
On May 29, 2026, AM Best affirmed the A (Excellent) financial strength rating and "a+" issuer credit rating of Symetra Life Insurance Company and First Symetra National Life Insurance Company of New York, with a stable outlook, citing balance sheet strength it assesses as very strong, adequate operating performance and a favorable business profile. Symetra also holds ratings from S&P Global and Moody's; its website lists their last affirmations as April 1, 2024 and February 26, 2025. AM Best's A is one notch below the A+ held by several large life insurers.
Symetra was not among the insurers ranked in the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Individual Life Insurance Study.
Who it suits
Symetra suits people who work with an independent agent and want either quick term coverage with a largely online process or an indexed universal life policy with chronic illness and cancer benefits. It suits less well buyers who want whole life, small final expense policies, a captive agent relationship or a way to buy without any agent, and those who put the highest possible rating first.
- Strengths: SwiftTerm offers up to $5 million with instant or accelerated decisions for many applicants; broad living-benefit riders on permanent policies, including Cancer Care Compass; backing from Sumitomo Life, a large Japanese mutual; AM Best affirmed its A rating in May 2026.
- Weaknesses: No whole life or final expense products; sold only through agents and other intermediaries; AM Best rating of A rather than A+; not ranked in J.D. Power's 2026 life insurance satisfaction study.
