Protective Life vs Symetra
Two Japanese-owned, agent-sold insurers: Protective offers term to 40 years and guaranteed UL; Symetra offers online SwiftTerm and IUL with cancer-care riders.
Verdict
Protective Life and Symetra have a lot in common. Both are owned by Japanese insurers (Daiichi Life Group since 2015; Sumitomo Life, a policyholder-owned mutual, since 2016), both sell only through agents and other intermediaries, and both offer term with online or accelerated paths. Neither lists whole life as a main consumer product: Protective offers single premium whole life only for legacy planning, and Symetra says it sells no whole life or final expense insurance.
Protective is larger (ranked #7 by 2024 individual life premiums versus #37 for Symetra's group) and has a wider lineup: Classic Choice term from 10 to 40 years, guaranteed universal life with level premiums, fixed and variable universal life, and acquisitions of other insurers' blocks. Symetra's term is shorter, with SwiftTerm at 10, 15, 20 or 30 years from $100,000 to $5 million for ages 20 to 60, and a traditionally underwritten Symetra Term to age 80. Symetra's indexed universal life policies feature chronic illness access and Cancer Care Compass, a cancer benefit with a multi-cancer early detection test.
On ratings, Protective's profile lists A+ (Superior) from AM Best as of September 2025, with AA- from S&P and Fitch. Symetra's AM Best rating is A (Excellent), affirmed May 29, 2026, one notch lower; its S&P and Moody's affirmations date from 2024 and 2025. Protective ranked 14th of 23 in J.D. Power's 2026 study; Symetra was not ranked. Symetra closed an acquisition of Dearborn Group's life and disability business via reinsurance on October 1, 2025; Protective ceded about $9.7 billion of reserves to Resolution Life in 2025 and kept administration.

Before you decide
Because both sell through agents, ask an independent agent for quotes on the same amount and health class from each (how to compare life insurance quotes fairly).
