Overview

SBLI is the brand of The Savings Bank Mutual Life Insurance Company of Massachusetts, a policyholder-owned life insurer headquartered in Woburn, Massachusetts, about 20 minutes north of Boston. It sells mainly level term life insurance, plus whole life, and is licensed in 49 states and Washington, D.C. It does not sell in New York.

SBLI ranked #66 among U.S. life insurance groups by 2024 individual life direct premiums written, according to NAIC market share data, with $347.8 million in premiums and a 0.22% share. The company reports more than $180 billion of insurance in force and more than $3.4 billion in assets, and says it has protected more than 1 million families since its founding (figures from its 2024 annual statement). Its NAIC company code is 70435.

One point causes frequent confusion. SBLI is not affiliated with SBLI USA Life Insurance Company, Inc., a separate New York company that grew out of New York's own savings bank life insurance system and is now part of Prosperity Life Group. SBLI's own website and press releases carry that disclaimer. If your policy documents say "SBLI USA," this profile is not about your insurer. SBLI also uses a second trademark, Centrian, in some marketing.

History

Savings Bank Life Insurance was the idea of Louis D. Brandeis, then a Boston lawyer and later a U.S. Supreme Court justice. Troubled by the high cost of industrial life insurance sold door to door to working families, he pushed for a system in which mutual savings banks would sell low-cost policies over the counter. The Massachusetts Legislature created it by statute in 1907, and for 85 years the coverage was sold through life insurance departments in the state's mutual savings banks.

In 1992 state legislation reorganized the system into The Savings Bank Life Insurance Company of Massachusetts, a stock company owned by participating savings banks. By 2017, 30 shareholder banks owned it. In a policyholder vote on June 28, 2017, about 92% of voting policyholders and annuity holders approved converting the company to a mutual, and the conversion was completed on July 26, 2017. SBLI issued $57.3 million of surplus notes and used the proceeds to buy out the banks' shares. The company then took its current legal name. Members now elect the board of directors each year.

Since the 2000s SBLI has grown from a Massachusetts insurer into a national direct and brokerage writer of term life. Recent changes include a partnership with Swiss Re on underwriting, Swiss Re's claims tools in 2025, new EasyTrak and OmniTrak term products for financial professionals in 2025, and a brand refresh in September 2025. James (Jim) Morgan is president and CEO.

Life insurance products

SBLI's product line is short.

  • Level term life: terms of 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 years, with the available lengths depending on your age at application. Coverage runs from $100,000 to $5 million, and higher amounts can be requested through an agent. Term is issued at ages 18 to 74. Premiums are level for the term. Afterward you can renew coverage annually up to age 85 at rising rates. You can convert the policy to whole life or universal life, without new medical underwriting, during the level term or up to age 70, whichever comes first.
  • No-exam option: accelerated underwriting without a medical exam is available for up to $1 million at ages 18 to 50 and up to $500,000 at ages 51 to 60. Applications that don't qualify go through traditional underwriting.
  • Broker products: for financial professionals, SBLI offers EasyTrak Term, which it says gives decisions in under 45 seconds, and OmniTrak Term, launched in October 2025, which routes applicants to instant, accelerated or traditional underwriting.
  • Whole life: level-premium whole life with guaranteed cash value and lifetime coverage, including a single-premium version. SBLI says eligible policies may receive dividends, which are not guaranteed. A term rider can be added to a whole life policy to raise coverage during the child-raising years.

SBLI's site gives sample pricing. One example: a 35-year-old non-smoking woman in the best class could buy a $500,000, 20-year term policy for about $20 to $24 a month on its automatic payment plan. That is the company's example, not a quote; your rate depends on age, health and underwriting. SBLI does not sell indexed or variable universal life, final expense or guaranteed issue policies.

Every policy comes with a free subscription to LegacyShield, an SBLI-owned online vault for storing documents and creating basic estate-planning papers. It is not insurance.

Buying and service

You can get a quote and apply online at sbli.com, or call SBLI's licensed life insurance professionals at 800-650-4391, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern. The company also sells through independent agents and brokers, who get their own quoting platform. This makes SBLI one of the more accessible options for buying online from a traditional mutual.

Existing customers can sign in at my.sbli.com to view policy information, download forms and make payments. Customer service is at 800-694-7254, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern; the same number has an automated line for premium payments. The Woburn office takes in-person appointments.

Claims

Beneficiaries can start a claim online through SBLI's "Start a claim" link, which runs on Swiss Re's Automated Claims Experience (ACE) platform, or by calling customer service at 800-694-7254. SBLI said in May 2025 that ACE lets it settle many claims in fewer than 10 days, and that simple cases, such as a claim under $100,000 with a verified beneficiary, can be paid in as little as one day. It added Swiss Re's CARE claims decision engine at the same time. Expect to provide a certified death certificate and a claimant's statement. See the claims guide.

Ratings and reputation

SBLI reports a financial strength rating of A (Excellent) from AM Best, its second-highest category, and A- (Strong) from S&P, as listed on its ratings page in late 2025 and confirmed in the CEO's 2025 letter to members. AM Best downgraded SBLI from A+ (Superior) to A in November 2016. AM Best cited profitability that was "at best modest," product concentration and declining capital trends, while crediting its position as a low-cost term provider. SBLI does not list ratings from Moody's or Fitch.

SBLI was not ranked in the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Individual Life Insurance Study. SBLI is examined by the Massachusetts Division of Insurance every five years, and its CEO wrote in 2025 that its latest exams were under way.

Who it suits

SBLI suits people who want plain term life insurance at a competitive price, a fast online or phone application and the option to skip the medical exam, from a company owned by its policyholders. Its long conversion window, to age 70, helps people who may want permanent coverage later. It suits fewer people who need complex permanent coverage, estate-planning products or a local agent relationship, and it does not cover New York residents.

  • Strengths: policyholder-owned mutual since 2017 with a history going back to 1907; term from $100,000 to $5 million with no-exam underwriting up to $1 million through age 50; conversion to permanent coverage up to age 70; published claims speed, with many claims settled in under 10 days.
  • Weaknesses: ratings of A (AM Best) and A- (S&P) are a notch below the largest mutuals; narrow product line with no universal, indexed or variable life; not available in New York; often confused with the unrelated SBLI USA.
