Overview
Boston Mutual Life Insurance Company is a mutual insurance company based in Canton, Massachusetts. It is owned by its policyholders rather than shareholders. It focuses on working Americans: union members, municipal and other public employees, first responders, teachers and small businesses. At the workplace it offers whole life, group term, accident, critical illness and disability insurance. A general agency field force also sells whole life to individuals and families. The company has a second corporate office in Omaha, Nebraska, but directs all customer inquiries to Canton.
The Boston Mutual group ranked #94 among U.S. life insurance groups by 2024 individual life direct premiums written, according to NAIC market share data, with about $141.7 million in premiums and a 0.09% market share. The group has two companies: Boston Mutual Life (NAIC code 61476), which sells in every state except New York, and Life Insurance Company of Boston & New York, its New York subsidiary.
The company is small and conservatively capitalized. Its 2025 annual report shows $181.4 million of premium income, $1.76 billion of total liabilities and surplus (equal to its total assets), $259.2 million of surplus and a risk-based capital ratio of 655%. It reported paying $130 million in benefits in 2025. Operating gains were thin, about $20,000 in 2025, down from $3.2 million in 2024.
History
Boston Mutual Life started in 1891 in a small office in downtown Boston. It describes itself as having been founded as a "progressive" life insurer serving working Americans and their families. It has remained a mutual and is now headquartered in Canton, south of Boston. Today it describes itself as a national carrier offering insurance at the workplace and for individuals, with enrollment and billing services for employers, and it promotes programs aimed specifically at Massachusetts municipalities.
AM Best upgraded Boston Mutual Life and Life Insurance Company of Boston & New York to A (Excellent) from A- in February 2017. In 2025 the company completed a strategic plan it called Vision 2025. It also launched the pilot of BML Connect, a new policy administration and digital enrollment platform, which it expanded in August 2026. In February 2025, the claims team was folded into the customer experience department.
Leadership changed at the start of 2026. Paul A. Quaranto Jr., who led the company for 12 years, retired as CEO on December 31, 2025, and stayed on as board chair. Grant D. Ward Sr., who joined in 2016 and had been president and chief operating officer, became president and CEO on January 1, 2026. He also became president of the New York subsidiary. The company says Ward is only its eighth president.
Life insurance products
Boston Mutual's individual life products are all whole life. Premiums stay level, and the coverage does not shrink as long as premiums are paid. The policies build guaranteed cash value that you can borrow against or withdraw. Through its general agencies it sells three plans:
- Infinite Life, a permanent policy with guaranteed cash value that increases each year.
- Legacy Life Select, permanent coverage for federal, state and municipal employees and their families who are actively at work or in school. It offers up to $250,000 of coverage through a simple application.
- Legacy Life Express, permanent coverage for families of up to $250,000, with what the company calls an easy application.
The company does not advertise individual term life, universal life or indexed products. Applicants for new individual coverage must be 80 or younger.
Riders include a Children's Term Rider, which covers children from 15 days old to age 25. After 25, each child can convert to an individual policy worth up to five times the rider amount or $40,000, without proving insurability (see child term riders: coverage, conversion and alternatives). An Accelerated Benefit Option is included at no cost and advances part of the death benefit for terminal illness or certain physical conditions (see accelerated death benefit). Other riders are an accidental death benefit that doubles the payout, a payor waiver of premium for permanent disability and a premium deposit fund that earns interest and can pay future premiums.
At the workplace, Boston Mutual offers whole life, employer-paid basic group life and group voluntary term life with added accident protection. The company says basic life stays with you during your employment and, in some cases, into retirement. Its FAQ says that in many cases term coverage can be converted to permanent coverage through an agent.
Other products
Boston Mutual sells accident insurance both at work and to individuals, with Spanish-language materials and claim forms. A wellness rider pays a benefit for routine health screenings. At the workplace it also offers critical illness insurance, which pays a lump sum for diagnoses such as heart attack, stroke or cancer, and disability income insurance. It does not sell annuities to consumers.
Buying and service
You can buy Boston Mutual coverage in two ways: through an employer, union or association that offers it at enrollment, or through a local representative. The website's "Find a Sales Rep" tool searches by state for individual and workplace representatives. You cannot apply online on your own.
Customer service handles beneficiary changes, policy loans, cash surrenders and other policy changes at 800-669-2668, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday. You can also reach it through a secure email portal. Most changes require a signed form sent by email or mail to the Canton office. The FAQ says ownership changes take about 21 business days. A lost policy certificate can be replaced for free, but a full duplicate policy costs $10. Monthly payments are by bank draft, and employers can use worksite web billing.
Claims
For a death claim, beneficiaries use the Life & Accidental Death Benefit Kit (form 916-700), available in English and Spanish on the website. The kit lists what to send: a certified death certificate, a copy of the claimant's photo ID and, for an accidental death, accident or police reports. It also explains what to do when there are several beneficiaries. The Claims Services team answers status and form questions at 877-212-2950 or by email. The company does not publish a payout timeframe. Our claims guide covers the general process.
Ratings and reputation
AM Best most recently affirmed Boston Mutual Life's A (Excellent) financial strength rating and "a" issuer credit rating, with a stable outlook, in March 2026, according to AM Best's rating profile for the company. Its 2025 annual report described the prior year's affirmation as the eighth consecutive year at that rating. AM Best first raised Boston Mutual and Life Insurance Company of Boston & New York to A (Excellent) in February 2017. The company does not publish ratings from S&P, Moody's or Fitch. It was not among the brands ranked in the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Individual Life Insurance Study.
As a mutual, Boston Mutual pays modest policyholder dividends: about $2.0 million in 2025, according to its annual report. The company has been named to the Boston Business Journal's list of the most charitable companies in Massachusetts for eight consecutive years through 2026.
Who it suits
Boston Mutual suits workers who are offered its coverage through a union, town or employer and want simple whole life, group term or accident coverage with payroll deduction. It also suits families who want small-to-moderate whole life from a representative, with riders for children. It is a weaker fit for anyone who wants low-cost individual term coverage, large face amounts, indexed or variable policies, or to buy online without a salesperson.
- Strengths: Policyholder-owned mutual dating to 1891; A (Excellent) from AM Best, affirmed for an eighth straight year in 2025; a risk-based capital ratio of 655% at the end of 2025; clear claim kits in English and Spanish; children's term rider with conversion rights.
- Weaknesses: No individual term, universal life or indexed products; individual plans cap at $250,000; sold only through representatives and workplace enrollment; only one rating agency; thin operating gains in 2025.
