Overview
Ladder is an online life insurance agency that sells one product, level term life insurance, through a fully digital application. Its name comes from its main feature: you can lower ("ladder down") your coverage during the term as your mortgage shrinks or your children grow up, and your premium drops with it.
Ladder is not an insurer. Its licensing page says agency and third-party administrator services are provided by Ladder Insurance Services, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Ladder Financial Inc. The company is privately held and backed by venture investors; TechCrunch reported in October 2021 that it raised $100 million at a $900 million valuation in a round led by Thomvest Ventures and OMERS Growth Equity. Jamie Hale is chief executive.
Who issues the policy
Ladder's site disclosure (checked October 2026) says Ladder Insurance Services offers term policies on behalf of three insurers:
| Issuer | Where |
|---|---|
| Amica Life (Lincoln, Rhode Island) | D.C. and all states except New York |
| Fidelity Security Life Insurance Company (Kansas City, Missouri) | D.C. and all states except New York |
| S.USA Life Insurance Company, a Prosperity Life Group company (Roanoke, Virginia) | D.C. and all states except Connecticut and New York |
Ladder's disclosure adds that "each insurer is solely responsible for any claims." The insurer named on your policy holds the reserves and pays the death benefit, so its financial strength is what matters. AM Best affirmed Amica Life at A+ (Superior) on March 17, 2026, and affirmed S.USA and its Prosperity Life affiliates at A- (Excellent) on November 5, 2025. We could not confirm a current AM Best rating for Fidelity Security Life from a primary source; check AM Best's site if your policy is issued by that company. Your policy schedule names the issuer, and you do not pick it yourself.
How buying works
You apply online by answering health and lifestyle questions. Ladder describes its underwriting as real time, which "may lead to on-the-spot coverage." For $3 million of coverage or less there is no exam. Above $3 million, Ladder says it may ask for a free health check: a technician visits your home or office, takes height and weight, and draws blood. Ladder's agent FAQ says applicants must be U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents who have lived in the United States for more than two years.
Every policy has a 30-day free-look period: cancel in the first 30 days for a full refund. After that, Ladder says you can cancel at any time with no cancellation fee. Lowering coverage later does not require new underwriting; asking for more coverage means going through underwriting again.
Products and limits
- Term lengths: 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 years, with the limit that your age plus the term cannot exceed 70.
- Ages: 20 to 60 in most states, based on your age at your nearest birthday.
- Coverage: Ladder's help center says $100,000 to $8 million in most states; its home page highlights no-exam coverage up to $3 million.
- No permanent products: Ladder does not sell whole or universal life.
Ladder publishes a dated example in its site footer: prices starting at $5 a month for a 20-year-old rated Preferred Plus buying a $100,000, 10-year policy, "valid as of 4/7/26." That is Ladder's own example for the healthiest rate class, not a typical price.
Reputation
We found no published regulatory enforcement action against Ladder Insurance Services in sources searched in October 2026. Ladder's site footer cites media "best of" lists; we do not repeat review-site ratings. The issuing insurers' AM Best ratings above are the more useful measure of claims-paying strength.
Who it suits
Ladder suits healthy adults up to 60 who want straightforward term coverage, especially those whose need will fall over time, such as a family paying down a mortgage. The ability to cut coverage without buying a new policy is a real convenience compared with a traditional laddering term life policies to match your needs made of several policies. People over 60, New York residents and anyone wanting permanent coverage need to look elsewhere, and applicants with significant health conditions may do better with an independent broker who can shop many carriers; see captive vs independent life insurance agents.
- Strengths: no exam up to $3 million; coverage can be reduced during the term; issuers include Amica Life, rated A+ by AM Best; licensing disclosed state by state; 30-day free look.
- Weaknesses: term only; maximum issue age 60 and term must end by 70; not available in New York; you cannot choose the issuer; phone support hours are limited.
How to contact Ladder
Ladder's terms of service list 844-533-7206 and [email protected] for policies issued by Amica, S.USA or Fidelity Security Life, and a mailing address of P.O. Box 456, Menlo Park, CA 94026. Its help center says phone support is open on weekday mornings, Pacific time.
