Erie Family Life vs State Farm
Both are P&C-affiliated life insurers sold beside auto and home. Erie uses independent agents in its states; State Farm uses captive agents nearly nationwide.
Verdict
Erie Family Life and State Farm are alike in a few ways. Each is the life arm of a large auto and home insurer, each is ultimately owned by a policyholder-owned company (the Erie Insurance Exchange and State Farm Mutual), and each is mainly bought through a local agent who also writes your car and home policy. The differences are the agent model, reach and scale.
ERIE life insurance is sold by independent ERIE agencies, which often represent other life insurers too, so your agent can compare. It is available only in Erie's operating states and not in New York. State Farm sells through exclusive (captive) agents who can quote only State Farm, but it is available in every state except Massachusetts, with New York and Wisconsin served by a sister company. State Farm is also far larger: it ranked #6 among U.S. life groups by 2024 individual life premiums, against #74 for the Erie group, according to NAIC data in the profiles.
Financial strength differs by one notch. AM Best rates State Farm's life companies A+ (Superior), after a November 2025 downgrade from A++, and Erie Family Life A (Excellent) as of September 2025. State Farm ranked 2nd in the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Individual Life Insurance Study; Erie Family Life was not ranked.
Choose Erie Family Life if
- You already insure your car or home with ERIE, live in its territory and want a multi-policy discount.
- You want an agent who is independent and can also quote other life insurers.
- You are 18 to 55 and want ERIExpress Life, a term or whole life policy of $10,000 to $500,000 with no paramedical exam.
- You want a 5-year or 15-year term, which State Farm's Select Term does not offer.
- You value the guaranteed insurability or long-term care accelerated death benefit riders.
Choose State Farm if
- You live outside Erie's states, including New York, and want a major carrier through a local office.
- You want participating whole life that can pay dividends (the two life companies paid $924 million for 2025; dividends are not guaranteed), or universal life.
- You want term conversion to permanent coverage regardless of health, or return of premium term.
- You value J.D. Power satisfaction results and a higher AM Best rating.
