Overview

Erie Family Life Insurance Company is the life insurer of Erie Insurance, the Erie, Pennsylvania, group best known for auto, home and business insurance. The Erie Insurance group ranked #74 among U.S. life insurance groups by 2024 individual life direct premiums written, according to NAIC market share data, with $264.6 million in premiums and a 0.17% market share.

Erie Family Life is a stock company wholly owned by Erie Insurance Exchange, a reciprocal insurer owned by its policyholders (called subscribers). Erie Indemnity Company, which is publicly traded on Nasdaq, manages the Exchange as its attorney-in-fact but does not own the life company. In practice this makes Erie Family Life a policyholder-owned group's life arm, much like the life companies of other mutual and reciprocal P&C insurers.

ERIE life insurance is sold only through independent ERIE agents, the same local agencies that write Erie's car and home policies. Its products are limited to the states where Erie operates, mostly in the Mid-Atlantic, Southeast and Midwest, and ERIE life and annuity products are not available in New York, even though Erie sells auto and home insurance there.

History

Erie Insurance Exchange began in 1925, when H.O. Hirt and O.G. Crawford, two salesmen for the Pennsylvania Indemnity Exchange, left to start their own auto insurer in Erie. The Pennsylvania Insurance Department licensed the Exchange, and it began operations on April 20, 1925, with Erie Indemnity Company as its attorney-in-fact.

Erie Family Life Insurance Company was incorporated in Pennsylvania on May 23, 1967, and began business on September 1, 1967. For decades it was partly public: in 2005 it was owned 53.5% by the Exchange, 21.6% by Erie Indemnity and 24.9% by public shareholders, mostly Erie directors, agents and employees, and it sold individual and group life, annuities and disability income products through independent agents in 11 jurisdictions.

In March 2006 Erie Indemnity and the Exchange announced a cash tender offer of $32.00 per share for the publicly held shares, and the offer was completed in May 2006, taking Erie Family Life private. On March 31, 2011, Erie Indemnity sold its 21.6% stake to the Exchange, leaving Erie Family Life wholly owned by the Exchange.

Life insurance products

  • Term life. Erie offers level term for 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 years, including what it calls guaranteed level term and an easy-to-buy option. You can convert term to a permanent Erie Family Life policy during the level period or before age 70, whichever comes first, for a face amount equal to or less than the term policy, without new evidence of health (conversion privilege, converting term life to permanent: how the conversion option works). As a pricing example in a company blog post, Erie says a healthy 30-year-old man buying a 10-year, $250,000 term policy could pay less than $15 a month.
  • ERIExpress Life is a simplified application for ages 18 to 55: a term or whole life policy from $10,000 to $500,000, approved after a few medical questions with no paramedical exam, with coverage that can start the same day. An accelerated death benefit rider is included automatically. Some health histories are referred to full underwriting instead (no-medical-exam term life insurance: how it works).
  • Whole life offers level premiums and guaranteed cash value you can borrow against. Erie notes that loans reduce benefits if not repaid and that not every plan is available at every age.

Riders include a long-term care accelerated death benefit rider on whole life, which pays part of the death benefit early if the insured cannot perform two of six activities of daily living (not available in Washington, D.C.), and a Guaranteed Insurability Option rider for issue ages 0 to 40 that lets you add coverage after qualifying life events without new underwriting (long-term care riders on life insurance, guaranteed insurability riders: buying more coverage later). For policies under $100,000, Erie says applicants typically complete only an application, without an exam.

Other products

Erie Family Life also sells annuities and IRAs for retirement savings, life insurance planning for businesses, and ERIE Medicare Supplement coverage (not available in Washington, D.C. or New York). The wider Erie Insurance Group writes auto, home, renters, umbrella and business insurance, and customers who bundle two or more ERIE policies can get a multi-policy discount.

Buying and service

You buy ERIE life insurance through a local independent ERIE agent, who can quote and apply for you; there is no direct online purchase. Erie Family Life's service line is 800-458-0811, option 3, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Eastern, and Erie's general Customer Care is at the same number, option 5. Because ERIE agencies are independent (independent agent), many also represent other life insurers, so you can ask your agent to compare.

Claims

Beneficiaries can start a death claim online through Erie's "Start a Life Insurance Death Claim" form or by calling 800-458-0811, option 2, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Eastern. Claim documents can be faxed to 814-461-1238 or mailed to Erie Family Life Insurance Company, 100 Erie Insurance Place, Erie, PA 16530. Expect to provide a certified death certificate and a claimant statement; see how to file a life insurance claim.

Ratings and reputation

AM Best affirmed Erie Family Life's financial strength rating of A (Excellent) and its long-term issuer credit rating of "a" (Excellent), with a stable outlook, in September 2026, assessing its balance sheet strength as very strong. A year earlier, in September 2025, AM Best had affirmed Erie Family Life while downgrading the property-casualty members of Erie Insurance Group to A (Excellent) from A+ (Superior), citing multi-year declines in surplus driven by large weather losses and higher auto and homeowners claim severity. Erie Indemnity's 2025 annual report confirms the Exchange's AM Best rating is A (Excellent). Erie Family Life does not publish S&P, Moody's or Fitch ratings.

Erie Family Life was not among the brands ranked in the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Individual Life Insurance Study.

Who it suits

Erie Family Life suits people who already insure their car or home with ERIE, live in its territory and want term or whole life from the same local agent, with a bundling discount and simple no-exam coverage up to $500,000 for younger applicants. It is a weaker fit for New York residents, who cannot buy it, for anyone outside Erie's states, and for buyers who want indexed or variable universal life or an online purchase.

  • Strengths: Term from 5 to 30 years with conversion up to age 70; ERIExpress Life with no exam up to $500,000 for ages 18 to 55; long-term care and guaranteed insurability riders; owned by a policyholder-owned reciprocal rather than outside shareholders.
  • Weaknesses: Not available in New York and limited to Erie's operating states; A (Excellent) from AM Best (September 2025), below the A+ or A++ of many large life insurers, while its P&C parent group was downgraded the same month; no online application; a narrow product line.
