Overview
The Cincinnati Life Insurance Company is the life insurance subsidiary of Cincinnati Financial Corporation, the Ohio-based property and casualty insurer known to most customers as Cincinnati Insurance. The NAIC files it as the Cincinnati Financial group, which ranked #64 among U.S. life insurance groups by 2024 individual life direct premiums written, according to NAIC market share data, with about $390.2 million in premiums and a 0.25% market share.
Cincinnati Life is a subsidiary of The Cincinnati Insurance Company, which is owned by Cincinnati Financial Corporation, a public company traded on Nasdaq under the ticker CINF. The life company sells only through independent agents. According to Cincinnati Financial's 2025 annual report on Form 10-K, about 84% of its 2,292 property and casualty agency relationships offered Cincinnati Life products at the end of 2025. It also works with about 489 other independent life agencies. Roughly 62% of term and other life premiums came through the property and casualty agencies.
The life segment is a small part of the parent: $330 million of net earned premiums in 2025, 2.6% of consolidated revenue, with a $65 million pretax segment profit. Term life is its largest line, and life insurance in force grew 4% in 2025 to about $87.3 billion of face amount. Cincinnati Life is licensed in 49 states and the District of Columbia.
History
Cincinnati Insurance was founded in 1950 by four independent agents, John J. Schiff, Robert Schiff, Chester Field and Harry Turner. It issued its first policy on January 25, 1951. The founders built the company around independent agencies, and that commitment still shapes how the life company sells.
Cincinnati Financial Corporation was formed as a holding company in 1968. In 1973 it added a life subsidiary, The Life Insurance Company of Cincinnati, and merged with Inter-Ocean Corporation, whose subsidiaries included Inter-Ocean Insurance Company. In 1988 the two life subsidiaries were combined to form The Cincinnati Life Insurance Company.
Steven J. Johnston became CEO in 2011, and Stephen M. Spray became CEO in 2024.
Life insurance products
The 10-K lists four lines that make up about 99% of the life segment's revenue:
- Term life. Level coverage for 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 years, with an optional return of premium provision that refunds paid base premiums if you outlive the term (see return of premium term life insurance: is it worth it). Term is fully underwritten using traditional and accelerated methods, so expect health questions and possibly an exam depending on age and amount.
- Whole life. Fully underwritten, with guaranteed level premiums, a death benefit that never decreases and guaranteed cash values available for policy loans. The company says paid-up values are stated up front for each policy year, so you know your options if you stop paying. It markets whole life for estate conservation, business continuation, charitable giving, term conversion and impaired risks.
- Universal life. Fully underwritten flexible-premium coverage with a guaranteed minimum crediting rate and maximum charges, but non-guaranteed cash values that depend on how much and when you pay. See universal life insurance.
- Worksite products. Individually owned term, return of premium term and whole life sold to employees through payroll deduction, issued with simplified underwriting or on a guaranteed issue basis. See supplemental (voluntary) life insurance at work.
Cincinnati Life does not advertise indexed universal life, variable life, final expense or online no-exam policies on its consumer pages.
Other products
Cincinnati Life sells deferred annuities and immediate annuities. Its consumer page says the deferred annuities have no sales charges, loads, fees or administration costs, credit a guaranteed minimum rate for the life of the contract and include a return of premium feature. The 10-K notes that surrender charges and market value adjustments can apply to some contracts surrendered during the deferral period. The claims page also handles disability claims. Cincinnati's sister companies write commercial, home, auto and excess and surplus lines insurance.
Buying and service
You buy Cincinnati Life coverage through an independent agent. The cinfin.com Find an Agent tool locates local agencies, and there is no direct online purchase. Because these agents also represent other insurers, a Cincinnati agent can compare Cincinnati Life with other carriers; see captive vs independent life insurance agents.
For policy service, Cincinnati asks life policyholders to complete and return a Policy Service Form from the Life Service Forms page or use the Life Policy Services contact form. Life Policy Services can be reached at 800-783-4479, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern on weekdays and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.
Claims
Beneficiaries report a life, annuity or disability claim to Life Claims at 888-212-6970 (7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Eastern, Monday to Friday) or through their agent. Have the policy number, date of death and the beneficiary's mailing or email address ready. A claims representative then sends the claimant's statement and a list of requirements. Documents can be emailed to [email protected], faxed to 513-870-2969 or mailed to Life Claims at P.O. Box 145496, Cincinnati, OH 45250-5496.
Cincinnati requires a certified death certificate showing the final cause and manner of death. An original certificate is needed for policies of $200,000 or more; a copy is accepted otherwise. Beneficiaries can take a lump sum by check or electronic transfer, use a Benefit Access Account where available, or choose a settlement option. Proceeds can be assigned to a funeral home. The company says claims are generally paid within three to five business days after it receives all required documents and approves the claim.
Ratings and reputation
On March 5, 2026, as it had in February 2025, AM Best affirmed The Cincinnati Life Insurance Company's financial strength rating of A+ (Superior) and its "aa" issuer credit rating with a stable outlook, alongside the Cincinnati property and casualty companies. Cincinnati Financial's ratings page lists Cincinnati Life at A+ from S&P Global Ratings and AA- from Fitch. Moody's rates the property and casualty companies but not the life company. Read more about what the grades mean in AM Best, S&P, Moody's and Fitch ratings explained.
Cincinnati Life was not among the brands ranked in the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Individual Life Insurance Study.
Who it suits
Cincinnati Life suits people who already use an independent agency for Cincinnati home, auto or business insurance and want to add traditional, fully underwritten term, whole life or universal life from a strongly rated company. Its worksite products also fit small employers that want payroll-deduction coverage for staff. It is less suited to buyers who want to apply online without an agent, need indexed or variable products, or want small guaranteed issue final expense policies outside the workplace.
- Strengths: A+ (Superior) from AM Best and A+ from S&P, plus AA- from Fitch; term to 30 years with a return of premium option; independent agents who can compare carriers; a stated claim payment target of three to five business days after approval.
- Weaknesses: No online application; no indexed, variable or direct-to-consumer final expense products; life insurance is a small part of a property and casualty company; not ranked by J.D. Power.
