Overview
Shelter Life Insurance Company is the life insurer of Shelter Insurance, a regional auto and home insurer based in Columbia, Missouri. It sells term, whole life and universal life through the same exclusive Shelter agents who sell the group's car and home policies. The Shelter Insurance group ranked #93 among U.S. life insurance groups by 2024 individual life direct premiums written, according to NAIC market share data, with about $149.1 million in premiums and a 0.10% market share. Shelter Life is the group's only life company (NAIC code 65757).
Shelter Life is a stock subsidiary of Shelter Mutual Insurance Company, a mutual insurance company owned by its policyholders. In 2025 Shelter Life paid a $33 million stockholder dividend to Shelter Mutual. According to Shelter's 2025 annual report, Shelter Life collected more than $175 million in premiums in 2025. At year-end it had $1.46 billion in total assets, $33.31 billion of life insurance in force and $329.5 million of net surplus. The parent group says it has nearly 1,400 licensed agents in 14 states: Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma and Tennessee.
History
Shelter began as an offshoot of the Missouri Farmers Association, a cooperative that grew out of a farm club formed by seven farmers in Brunswick, Missouri, in 1914. MFA Mutual Insurance Company opened on January 1, 1946, with seven employees and a $100,000 loan from the association, selling auto insurance in Missouri. In 1959 the group added a life insurer, MFA Life Insurance Company, so agents could offer life coverage too. By the early 1960s the companies had expanded into Arkansas, Kansas, Nebraska, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana and Oklahoma. MFA Life reached its first $1 billion of coverage in force in the mid-1970s.
In 1981 the insurers split from the Missouri Farmers Association and became Shelter Insurance Companies, and MFA Life became Shelter Life. The company says its Platinum Shield universal life policy drove life insurance in force past $2 billion by 1985. Life insurance in force passed $20 billion in 2010. Shelter says AM Best raised Shelter Life to A+ in 2014. Today the group also includes Shelter General, Shelter Reinsurance (formed in 1986), AmShield (2014) and Haulers Insurance Company. Charlie Aldrich became vice president and general manager of Shelter Life on October 1, 2025.
Life insurance products
Shelter's website describes three term policies:
- EZ Term: $50,000 of coverage until age 40, aimed at younger buyers on tight budgets, with level premiums. It can be converted to a permanent policy without proof of good health any time before age 40.
- Level Term: a guaranteed death benefit of $100,000 or more, with level premiums for 10, 20 or 30 years. It can be converted to permanent coverage during the conversion period without proof of good health. See conversion privilege.
- Shelter Express Term: for healthy applicants ages 18 to 60 without dangerous jobs or hobbies, issued without a physical exam (see no-medical-exam term life insurance: how it works). It comes in $50,000, $75,000 or $100,000 amounts. Premiums stay level for 30 years or to age 65, whichever comes first, and the death benefit is guaranteed to age 95 while premiums are paid.
Permanent policies include Whole Life, which Shelter says builds the most cash value and pays annual dividends that are not guaranteed (participating). Secure Whole Life is a lower-cost version without dividends. 20-Pay Whole Life is fully paid up after 20 years and also pays dividends (see limited-pay whole life: 10-pay, 20-pay and paid-up at 65). Universal Life lets you raise or lower premiums and choose a level death benefit or one that grows with the cash value.
Shelter's FAQ says universal life cash value can be borrowed, partially surrendered or fully surrendered. Each partial surrender carries a $25 charge and lowers the death benefit. Loan interest is capped at 6% a year. An accelerated death benefit provision lets a terminally ill insured with a life expectancy of 12 months or less withdraw up to 50% of the death benefit once.
Junior Special Insurance is a single-premium policy for children. It starts at $300 and buys up to $20,000 of coverage, which helps make sure a child can get coverage as an adult. See whole life insurance for children: pros and cons.

Buying and service
Shelter Life is sold only through exclusive Shelter agents. The website takes quote requests and has an agent locator. Customers can see their policies in the My Shelter online account. Shelter's customer line, 800-743-5837 (1-800-SHELTER), takes policy service calls Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Central Time. Changes to a life policy or cancellation require your signature on a company form, which Shelter will mail or fax.
Claims
Shelter's FAQ says life claims, and claims from anyone who is not a Shelter customer, should be filed by phone at 800-743-5837. Shelter says claims can be reported 24 hours a day. Claims mail goes to Shelter Insurance-Claims, P.O. Box 6008, Columbia, MO 65205, and documents can also be emailed with the claim number in the subject line. The website does not publish a life claim checklist or payout timeframe. Expect to provide a certified death certificate and a claimant statement; our claims guide explains the usual steps.
Ratings and reputation
Shelter Life holds an A (Excellent) financial strength rating from AM Best. Shelter's financial reports page lists the rating as verified in November 2025. In October 2024, AM Best affirmed the A (Excellent) financial strength ratings of Shelter Mutual and its subsidiaries, including Shelter Life. It also lowered their long-term issuer credit ratings to "a" from "a+" and moved the outlook to stable from negative. AM Best had revised the outlook on those issuer credit ratings to negative in September 2023. Shelter does not publish S&P, Moody's or Fitch ratings for the life company.
Shelter says the Ward Group named Shelter Life a top-performing life insurer for the third year in a row in 2025. J.D. Power has ranked Shelter's auto insurance first in customer satisfaction in its Central region in several years. However, Shelter Life was not among the brands ranked in the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Individual Life Insurance Study.
Who it suits
Shelter Life suits people in its 14 states who already have, or want, a Shelter agent for car and home insurance and want straightforward term, dividend-paying whole life, universal life or a small no-exam term policy in one place. It suits people less well if they want to apply online, compare several insurers' prices or need large no-exam coverage, indexed products or final expense policies.
- Strengths: A (Excellent) from AM Best (verified November 2025); a mutual parent; three term options including no-exam Express Term; participating whole life and 20-pay whole life; single-premium juvenile policies.
- Weaknesses: Sold only through Shelter agents in 14 states; no online application; AM Best lowered the group's issuer credit ratings in 2024; no ratings from S&P, Moody's or Fitch; Express Term caps at $100,000.
