Overview

The NAIC's "Industrial Alliance group" is the U.S. life insurance business of iA Financial Group, one of Canada's largest life insurers, based in Quebec City. Consumers mostly know it as American-Amicable, or the American Amicable Group of companies, run from the historic Alico Building in downtown Waco, Texas. The group's insurers are American-Amicable Life Insurance Company of Texas, iA American Life Insurance Company, Occidental Life Insurance Company of North Carolina, Pioneer American Insurance Company and Pioneer Security Life Insurance Company; the U.S. branch of the Canadian parent, Industrial Alliance Insurance and Financial Services Inc., is also part of the NAIC group.

The group ranked #55 among U.S. life insurance groups by 2024 individual life direct premiums written, according to NAIC market share data, with $557.0 million and a 0.36% share. American-Amicable says it has more than 1 million policies in force and more than $25 billion of life insurance in force, and paid more than $151 million in claims in 2023.

The companies sell mainly through independent agents and marketing organizations, focusing on middle-income households: final expense whole life for older buyers, term life (often sold as mortgage protection) and universal life. You cannot buy a policy directly online; the website connects you with an agent.

History

The company's roots are in Waco's insurance boom of the early 1900s. The Amicable Life Insurance Company built the 22-story Alico Building, completed in 1910 and at the time described as the tallest building west of the Mississippi and south of the Mason-Dixon line. It survived the deadly 1953 Waco tornado, became a Texas Historical Landmark in 1982 and is still the group's home office.

Industrial Alliance, founded in 1892 in Quebec and listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange in 2000 after converting from a mutual to a stock company, expanded into the U.S. by launching iA American Life Insurance Company in February 2010, initially based in Scottsdale, Arizona. Later that year, on July 20, 2010, it completed its purchase of American-Amicable Holding, Inc. for US$145.3 million. At the time American-Amicable was licensed in 49 states and territories and sold through more than 6,000 independent agents; it was folded in alongside iA American, whose administration is now run from Waco.

The parent now operates as iA Financial Group, with iA Financial Corporation Inc. as its holding company. In June 2024 its subsidiary iA American Holdings completed the US$170 million purchase of Vericity, Inc., the parent of Fidelity Life and the online agency eFinancial. Fidelity Life is reported separately in NAIC data, so its premiums are not included in this group's ranking.

Life insurance products

American-Amicable's public website describes three product types, all sold through agents:

  • Whole life, including final expense coverage for older buyers, with lifelong coverage, guaranteed premiums and cash value.
  • Term life, with level coverage for a set number of years, aimed at families and homeowners protecting a mortgage or income (see using term life insurance to cover a mortgage).
  • Universal life, with flexible premiums and death benefits and cash value that can be borrowed or withdrawn.

The company does not publish product names, ages, face amounts, term lengths or underwriting rules on its consumer site; those come from the agent's quote and application. Ask the agent which company in the group would issue your policy, since American-Amicable, iA American, Occidental and the Pioneer companies each issue their own contracts.

Other products

The group says its products include annuities as well as life insurance, though annuities are a small part of what it markets to consumers.

Buying and service

To buy, you work with an independent agent; the site's "Find an Agent" form sends your request to the company. Existing policyholders can manage their policy through the online account portal, pay by card through Express Pay, or contact customer service at 800-736-7311 or [email protected]. There is a client experience address ([email protected]) and a Spanish-language address ([email protected]). Mail goes to P.O. Box 2549, Waco, TX 76702.

Claims

Beneficiaries can report a death and start a claim by calling 800-736-7311, emailing [email protected], using the claims live chat or the "Submit a Claim" link on the website, or faxing 254-297-2756. Expect to provide a certified death certificate and a claimant's statement; as with any insurer, a death within the two-year contestability period can prompt a review of medical records. The claims guide covers the general steps.

Ratings and reputation

AM Best affirmed the A (Excellent) financial strength rating of iA's U.S. life insurers in the IA American Life Group, including iA American Life, American-Amicable Life Insurance Company of Texas the two Pioneer companies and Occidental Life Insurance Company of North Carolina, in October 2026, with a stable outlook. In the same action AM Best upgraded Fidelity Life Association, now part of the group, to A (Excellent) from A- (Excellent). The Canadian parent, Industrial Alliance Insurance and Financial Services Inc., is rated higher, A+ (Superior). The U.S. companies do not publish separate S&P, Moody's or Fitch ratings.

American-Amicable was not ranked in the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Individual Life Insurance Study.

Who it suits

American-Amicable fits middle-income buyers and seniors who are working with an independent agent and want modest whole life, final expense, term or universal life coverage from a company backed by a large Canadian insurer. It suits less well those who want to research products and prices online, buy without an agent, or compare detailed policy features before talking to anyone.

  • Strengths: A (Excellent) AM Best rating affirmed in 2025; backing of iA Financial Group, a large publicly traded Canadian insurer rated A+; more than a century of history in Waco; several service channels, including live chat and email for claims.
  • Weaknesses: sold only through independent agents, with no online purchase; almost no product detail published for consumers; several issuing companies under one brand can make it confusing to know which insurer is on your policy.
