Overview
Americo is the brand of Americo Life, Inc., a Kansas City, Missouri, insurance holding company that describes itself as one of the largest independent, privately held insurance companies in the United States. Its main operating company and the issuer of nearly all of its new policies is Americo Financial Life and Annuity Insurance Company, a Texas-domiciled stock insurer. The family also includes Great Southern Life Insurance Company, United Fidelity Life Insurance Company and National Farmers Union Life Insurance Company. Americo Life is owned by Financial Holding Corporation, a private Missouri company, which is why the NAIC files these insurers as the Financial Holdings group.
The group ranked #56 among U.S. life insurance groups by 2024 individual life direct premiums written, according to NAIC market share data, with $522.6 million in premiums and a 0.33% share. Americo does not employ its own sales force. It sells through independent agents, most of whom work through independent marketing organizations (IMOs) that recruit and train agents for several insurers. It is best known in those channels for final expense whole life and mortgage protection term policies with instant electronic decisions. Americo also runs a large administration business: besides its own companies' older policies, it services blocks of policies for insurers it does not own, so some people with no Americo policy still find Americo handling their contract.
History
The roots of the Americo companies reach back more than 100 years. Great Southern Life Insurance Company was founded in 1909, and Americo Financial Life and Annuity began in 1946 as The College Life Insurance Company of America. Missouri insurance department records show the company admitted to do business in Missouri in March 1947.
Americo Life, Inc. was incorporated in Missouri in 1992 as the holding company for insurers its owners had been assembling. Its SEC filings from the 1990s describe a business that began by buying life insurance companies and blocks of in-force policies and administering them at low cost, with no meaningful sales operation until it acquired Great Southern Life in 1989. Acquisitions continued: Loyalty Life and National Farmers Union Life in 1991, Victory Life in 1995 (together with a reinsurance deal covering the business of its former parent, The Kansas Life Insurance Company), and The Ohio State Life Insurance Company in 1997. The 2002 annual report listed six insurance subsidiaries, all domiciled in Texas, and noted that since 2001 virtually all new sales had been made through Americo Financial, with the other companies largely managing older business.
Americo Life issued public debt in the 1990s and 2000s, which is why it filed annual reports with the SEC. Those filings name Financial Holding Corporation as the sole owner and, in 2002, Michael A. Merriman as chairman and its largest individual shareholder. The company has since stopped filing with the SEC and remains private. The filings also record past litigation, including a late-1990s class action over sales practices for Great Southern's whole life and universal life policies, which Great Southern settled while denying the allegations.
Life insurance products
Americo's consumer site describes four kinds of individual life insurance, all sold through agents:
- Term life: level coverage for 10, 15, 20 or 30 years, with optional return of premium and automatic conversion features on some plans.
- Mortgage protection: Americo's HMS Plus series is term coverage designed to pay off or support a mortgage. Americo highlights a cash back option, the choice of paying the death benefit as monthly income, and living benefit riders included at no extra cost. See mortgage protection insurance vs term life for how this compares with ordinary term.
- Whole life and final expense: permanent coverage with fixed premiums. The Eagle Premier Series is Americo's final expense line, small whole life policies meant to cover funeral costs and final bills, typically issued with simplified issue underwriting. Americo says its electronic application gives an instant decision.
- Universal life and indexed universal life: flexible-premium permanent coverage, including Indexed universal life (IUL) explained policies with cash value credits tied to an index such as the S&P 500.
Americo's public pages do not publish issue ages, maximum face amounts, or a full rider list for each product; agents provide those details.
Other products
Americo sells fixed indexed annuities and multi-year guaranteed annuities (MYGAs) through the same independent agents. Great Southern Life and Americo Financial issued Medicare Supplement policies, and Americo maintains a separate service line for existing Medicare Supplement policyholders.
Buying and service
You cannot buy an Americo policy directly from the company or online on your own. Policies are sold by licensed independent agents, many of them working for IMOs that market final expense and mortgage protection by phone, mail and in-home appointments. Because those agents also represent other insurers, it is worth asking a independent agent to compare Americo's offer with at least one other carrier.
Existing policyholders can use the Americo Customer Portal online to view policy information and make one-time premium payments. Customer service is reached at 816-641-2850, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central. Forms for address changes, bank draft updates, beneficiary changes, required minimum distributions and cancellations can be sent by email, fax (800-395-9238) or mail to the Kansas City office.
Americo also administers policies for companies it does not own. Its contact page lists policies of Protective Life (formerly Ohio Life Insurance), Berkley Life and Health (formerly Investors Guaranty Life), First Health Life & Health (formerly Loyalty Life), Hudson Life and Annuity (formerly First Central National Life of New York), Renaissance Life and Health of America (formerly Central National Life of Omaha), Wilcac Life (formerly Massachusetts General Life), Athene Annuity and Life (formerly American Investors Life), American General Life (formerly Anchor National Life), and Ohio State Life policies issued before 2006. Owners of those policies call 800-366-6100. If your statements unexpectedly come from Americo, when your life insurance policy is sold to another company explains why.
Claims
Beneficiaries can start a death claim online by entering the policy number into Americo's electronic claim form, or through a separate web form if they do not know the policy number. Paper life insurance and annuity claim forms and an affidavit of next of kin can be downloaded from the claims page. Supporting documents, such as a certified death certificate, can be uploaded with the online form or emailed to [email protected]. By phone, call 816-641-2850 and press 4. Americo says its claims team reviews each completed claim form and contacts the claimant about anything else it needs. The general steps are in the claims guide.
Ratings and reputation
Americo says AM Best's financial strength rating for its insurance companies was A (Excellent), the third-highest of 15 categories, as of January 2026. AM Best first upgraded Americo Financial Life and Annuity to A from A- in October 2014. Americo does not publish ratings from S&P, Moody's or Fitch on its site. It was not among the 23 brands ranked in the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Individual Life Insurance Study.
As a private company that no longer files with the SEC, Americo publishes less financial information than public insurers do. Its main sales channel, IMO-recruited agents selling final expense and mortgage protection, is a part of the market where state regulators watch closely for high-pressure sales and replacement of existing coverage, so buyers should take time to compare offers.
Who it suits
Americo fits people who want a modest final expense policy or mortgage protection coverage with a fast, usually exam-free decision through an agent who comes to them or calls them. It also matters to anyone whose older policy, from Americo's own companies or from one of the insurers whose blocks it administers, is serviced from Kansas City. It is a weaker fit for buyers who want to compare and buy online, who want published product details and multiple agency ratings, or who prefer a larger, publicly reporting insurer.
- Strengths: A (Excellent) AM Best rating as of January 2026; instant-decision electronic applications for final expense and mortgage protection; mortgage protection with cash back and living benefit riders included; long experience administering acquired and third-party blocks.
- Weaknesses: sold only through independent agents, with no direct online purchase; few product specifications published for consumers; privately held, with limited public financial disclosure; customer service line is a Kansas City number with weekday hours only.
