Overview

Senior Life Insurance Company is a family-owned insurer in Thomasville, Georgia, that sells one thing: small life insurance policies meant to pay for a funeral, cremation and other end-of-life bills. Its final expense coverage goes up to $30,000 and is offered to people from birth to age 85, with a focus on buyers over 50. The company says it serves families in more than 40 states and Washington, D.C., and in a March 2025 announcement it described a network of more than 6,500 licensed agents.

The NAIC files the company's business under the Powell Insurance group (group code 4955), named for the family that owns it. The group has two members: Senior Life Insurance Company (NAIC code 78662), the operating company, and a much smaller affiliate, Senior Life Insurance Company of Texas, based in Austin. The group ranked #87 among U.S. life insurance groups by 2024 individual life direct premiums written, according to NAIC market share data, with about $168.3 million in premiums and a 0.11% market share.

Senior Life is privately held, so it does not publish annual reports. Ron Powell, who began his insurance career as a field agent, is chief executive and president. The company also recruits and trains its own agents, and its website gives agent careers equal billing with its policies.

History

The company traces its charter to 1970, when it was founded as Provident Security Life. According to the Thomasville Times-Enterprise, Dale Powell and his son Ron, who had worked as field agents and then built a large final expense marketing agency, bought the small insurer in 2000. At the time it was licensed in six states and based in Atlanta; the Powells renamed it Senior Life Insurance Company and moved it to Thomasville, in south Georgia. Senior Life now describes Ron Powell as its founder.

The company expanded state by state through the 2000s and 2010s. In October 2013 it opened its current headquarters at 1 Senior Life Lane in Thomasville, and in 2016 the local paper reported it operating in 39 states and Washington, D.C. In March 2025 Senior Life said it had been ranked the 7th fastest-growing U.S. life insurer in the third quarter of 2024 and that its business volume in early 2025 was up 20% from a year earlier. Senior Life Insurance Company of Texas is the group's second company; it is small, with total assets of about $3.5 million in recent statutory data compiled by Weiss Ratings.

Life insurance products

Senior Life's website does not publish product names, rate tables or brochures. It describes its coverage this way:

  • Final expense life insurance with face amounts up to $30,000. Policyholders can add more coverage at any age up to 85, up to that $30,000 maximum, subject to health questions.
  • Issue ages 0 to 85, with most sales to people over 50.
  • No medical exam or bloodwork. The application asks a few health questions, and the company says whether a policy is issued depends on those answers and payment of the first premium. Applicants with health problems can still apply; final expense insurers commonly place them in plans with a graded death benefits: why the first two years matter that pays limited benefits in the first years.
  • Level premiums on most plans. The company says premiums on its final expense plans are locked in for life, but notes that some term plans have premiums that increase after a certain period.
  • Cash value builds on permanent policies and may be borrowed against.

Because the plans are small and sold with health questions rather than full underwriting, they cost more per $1,000 of coverage than a fully underwritten policy. Shoppers who are in good health may find larger coverage for the same money with term life insurance or a fully underwritten whole life insurance policy. The burial insurance vs final expense vs preneed guide explains how these small policies differ from a prepaid funeral plan.

Buying and service

Senior Life sells through agents. Its website offers a free quote form, and new customers can call 877-777-8808 for a quote; a licensed agent then completes the application. Senior Life recruits and trains many of its agents itself, so it is worth checking an agent's license with your state insurance department and asking the questions in questions to ask a life insurance agent before buying.

Existing policyholders can use an online client portal, pay premiums online, and call the home office at 229-228-6936 Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time. Address changes, duplicate policies and bank-draft changes are handled by phone; ownership changes require a notarized Transfer of Ownership form.

Claims

To report a death, Senior Life directs beneficiaries to its online claim form or to the claims department at 877-777-8808. A claims representative then explains the paperwork. Beneficiaries should expect to provide a certified death certificate and claim form; the life insurance claim checklist lists what insurers typically ask for. If the insured dies within the first two years, the claim may be reviewed under the policy's the two-year contestability period, and a plan with a graded benefit may pay only a limited amount in the early years. The company does not publish claim payment times.

Ratings and reputation

Senior Life does not publish a financial strength rating from AM Best, S&P, Moody's or Fitch on its website, and it was not among the brands ranked in the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Individual Life Insurance Study. Weiss Ratings, which rates insurers from statutory filings, gave Senior Life Insurance Company a D (Weak) rating as of November 2025, citing operating losses in 2024 and weak results on its stability tests while describing capitalization as good. The same data showed total assets of about $118.9 million and capital of about $9.4 million. Weiss also rated Senior Life Insurance Company of Texas D as of November 2025.

In June 2021 a California man filed a proposed class action in federal court in San Diego (Miholich v. Senior Life Insurance Company) alleging that the company sent unsolicited text messages advertising "financed leads" and a webinar, in violation of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. The court denied the company's motion to dismiss in February 2022.

State guaranty association coverage, which protects policyholders if an insurer fails, applies to Senior Life policies within each state's limits; see your state guide, such as Georgia.

Who it suits

Senior Life suits older adults who want a modest policy to cover funeral costs, cannot easily qualify for traditional coverage, and prefer to buy face to face from an agent. Buyers should weigh the company's lack of ratings from the major agencies and its weak Weiss rating against those conveniences, and compare quotes from larger final expense insurers such as Lincoln Heritage, American-Amicable and Globe Life.

  • Strengths: coverage available from birth to age 85 with no medical exam; level premiums on most final expense plans; licensed in more than 40 states and Washington, D.C.; a published toll-free claims line and online claim form.
  • Weaknesses: no AM Best, S&P, Moody's or Fitch rating published; Weiss Ratings D (Weak) as of November 2025 with operating losses in 2024; no product details or rates published online; maximum coverage of $30,000; sales depend on a large, fast-growing agent force that the company recruits itself.
