Burial insurance
A small whole life policy meant to cover funeral, burial and end-of-life bills, often sold to older adults with simplified or no underwriting.
Also called: final expense insurance, funeral insurance
Burial insurance is a marketing name for small whole life policies designed to pay for a funeral and related bills, and it overlaps almost completely with final expense insurance. Policies are typically sold to people in their 50s through 80s, with face amounts far smaller than ordinary life insurance and premiums that stay level for life.
Most are simplified issue, with a short health questionnaire and no exam, or guaranteed issue, with no health questions at all. Guaranteed-issue policies usually have a graded benefit: if the insured dies of natural causes in the first two or three years, the beneficiary receives the premiums paid plus interest instead of the full benefit. Hypothetical example: a 70-year-old buys a $10,000 guaranteed-issue policy and dies of an illness 18 months later; the beneficiary gets back roughly the premiums paid plus interest, not $10,000.
Burial insurance is costly per dollar of coverage, and over many years total premiums can exceed the benefit. It differs from preneed insurance, which is tied to a specific funeral home contract. Compare quotes with and without health questions, and check whether existing coverage or savings could do the job.
