Overview

Zander Insurance is an independent insurance agency in Nashville, Tennessee. Herman Zander founded it in 1930, and his great-grandson Jeff Zander is now CEO. The company describes itself as a fourth-generation family business that is 49% owned by employees through an employee stock ownership plan. It sells term life, long-term disability, identity theft protection, auto, home and business insurance nationwide.

Most shoppers know Zander through Dave Ramsey. Ramsey and his team have recommended the agency to listeners for more than 30 years, and Zander's term life offering is built around Ramsey's approach: buy level term coverage of about 10 to 12 times income, avoid cash value policies, and skip most riders. Zander's legal page says Ramsey has authorized it to use his statements on the site.

Zander is a broker. You can get instant term quotes on its website or by phone, but the application is handled by Zander staff and the insurer, not completed online in one sitting.

Who issues the policy

Zander says plainly on its legal page that it "is not an insurance company but acts as an agent representing numerous insurance companies." The insurer you choose issues the policy, decides whether to approve you and at what price, and pays the death benefit.

Zander says it compares rates from more than a dozen insurers for term life, and that every carrier it represents has an AM Best rating of A- or better. Its carriers page, as of October 2026, names these life insurers:

The page does not list every insurer Zander quotes, so a policy may come from another company. Your contract names the issuer.

How buying works

Zander lays out the process this way:

  1. Quotes. You get instant quotes online or by calling a "Zander Guide." Quotes show level term prices on a 10-, 15-, 20- or 30-year basis.
  2. Application. Depending on the insurer, you complete the application in a phone interview, usually within 24 to 48 hours of your request and lasting 15 to 20 minutes, or on a paper application mailed to you. No payment is due at this stage.
  3. Exam. Most term products require a basic paramedical exam: a nurse visits at no cost, checks blood pressure and weight, and takes blood and urine samples. Some policies skip the exam depending on your age and the amount you apply for.
  4. Underwriting. The insurer reviews your answers, exam results and records. Zander says this typically takes four to six weeks after the exam and application are done, longer if medical records must be ordered. A Zander case manager follows the file.
  5. Decision. If approved, the insurer issues the policy. Coverage starts once you accept it and pay. If you are offered a different rate class than quoted, you can accept or decline at no cost.

Premiums can be paid annually, semiannually, quarterly or monthly (monthly by electronic funds transfer only), and most insurers charge more for paying more often than once a year. Some insurers offer limited temporary coverage at application under a conditional receipt. Zander warns not to cancel an existing policy until the new one is in force. After delivery, your state's free-look period lets you return the policy for a refund.

Products and limits

For life insurance, Zander quotes only level term life: 10-, 15-, 20- and 30-year guaranteed level premiums. It says most of the policies are renewable to age 95 at much higher annual premiums after the level period, and most are convertible to permanent coverage. It also offers "universal term" plans, universal life policies built to work like term with a guaranteed level premium and death benefit, which it says meet the Ramsey team's criteria. A children's term rider can be added. Coverage amounts and issue ages are set by each insurer; Zander does not publish overall limits.

Zander does not sell whole life or other cash value policies as savings vehicles, in line with Ramsey's views.

Reputation

The insurers Zander names carry strong ratings on our profiles: AM Best A+ (Superior) for Mutual of Omaha (April 2026) and Pacific Life (December 2025), and A (Excellent) for Banner Life (March 2026, downgraded from A+ after the Meiji Yasuda sale), Lincoln Financial (February 2026) and Transamerica (December 2025).

The Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America ("Big I") has named Zander a Best Practices Agency, according to Zander. We found no documented regulatory actions against Zander in a search of public sources.

Who it suits

Zander suits people who want straightforward level term coverage, like having an agency compare prices and manage the paperwork, and are comfortable with a traditional process that often includes an exam and can take several weeks. Its long Ramsey relationship makes it a common choice for listeners of that program. It suits less well people who want a fully online, instant decision, or who want permanent life insurance for estate planning or lifelong needs, since Zander's life lineup is limited to term and term-like plans.

Strengths

  • Compares more than a dozen insurers rated A- or better
  • Case manager follows the application through underwriting
  • Clear published disclosure of how it is paid
  • Long operating history and family/employee ownership

Weaknesses

  • Life lineup limited to level term and universal term
  • Most applications need an exam; approvals typically take four to six weeks
  • Not a fully online buying experience
