Overview
Alfa Life Insurance Corporation is the life insurance company of Alfa Insurance, the insurer created by the Alabama Farmers Federation. It sells term, whole life, universal life and final expense coverage through Alfa agents working out of local service centers in Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi, the same agents who sell Alfa's auto, home and farm policies. Alfa says it has 477 service centers and more than 2,300 team members, with its corporate headquarters in Montgomery, Alabama.
Alfa Life is the only member of the NAIC's Alfa Insurance group (group code 5). It ranked #86 among U.S. life insurance groups by 2024 individual life direct premiums written, according to NAIC market share data, with about $172.0 million in premiums and a 0.11% market share. That makes it a regional company: most of its business is concentrated in Alabama, where Alfa is one of the state's largest insurers.
Alfa Life is a stock insurance company owned by Alfa Corporation, which in turn has been wholly owned by the Alfa Mutual companies (Alfa Mutual Insurance Company, Alfa Mutual Fire Insurance Company and Alfa Mutual General Insurance Company) since 2008. The mutual companies are owned by their policyholders, so the life company is ultimately controlled by Alfa's mutual parents rather than outside shareholders. Alfa's president is Jimmy Parnell, who also leads the Alabama Farmers Federation.
History
The Alabama Farmers Federation was organized in January 1921 at Alabama Polytechnic Institute, now Auburn University. The organization, then called the Alabama Farm Bureau, began offering fire insurance to members in the 1940s and in 1946, under president Walter Leon Randolph, established the insurance company now known as Alfa. For its first decades, Farm Bureau life coverage in Alabama came through the regional Southern Farm Bureau Life company, which the Alabama Farm Bureau helped organize in 1946.
Alfa's own timeline says its first life insurance policy was bought on December 2, 1971, by a 37-year-old Coffee County farmer. In 1981 the Alabama organization split from the American Farm Bureau Federation over a dispute about insurance sales outside the state. After the split and a court settlement it dropped "Bureau" from its name: in 1987 the group became the Alabama Farmers Federation and Alabama Farm Bureau Insurance became Alfa Insurance, a name formed from the first letters of "Alabama" and "farmer." The Federation rejoined the American Farm Bureau Federation in 2005 but kept the Alfa name.
For about two decades the life company sat inside Alfa Corporation, a holding company whose shares traded on Nasdaq while the Alfa Mutual companies held a controlling stake. Under Goodwin L. Myrick, chief executive from 1978 to 1998, Alfa Corporation shifted from mainly a life insurance holding company to a broader insurer with most of its revenue from property and casualty pooling. In November 2007 the Alfa Mutual Group agreed to buy the shares it did not own for $22 per share, and the deal closed on April 15, 2008, taking Alfa Corporation private.
Alfa also bought Trexis, a nonstandard auto insurer formerly called Vision Insurance Group, in 2005, and launched its Alfa2Go mobile app in 2012. In 2025 it began building a new home office in Montgomery.
Life insurance products
Alfa's product pages list two families of coverage.
Term life
- Level Term: 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 years, for ages up to 70 and $80,000 of coverage and up, with a medical exam. It can be converted to permanent coverage up to age 65 (see converting term life to permanent: how the conversion option works).
- 30-Year Return of Premium: a 30-year term for ages 6 to 50, starting at $50,000. If you outlive the term, the base premiums and policy fees are refunded. See return of premium term life insurance: is it worth it for the trade-offs of paying more for that refund.
- Rapid Issue Term: a simplified-issue plan with no medical exam, for ages 18 to 59, in amounts of $25,000 or $75,000 and terms of 10, 20 or 30 years, with a conversion period.
Permanent life
- Whole Life: level premiums and guaranteed cash value, ages 0 to 80, from $15,000, with an exam.
- Interest Sensitive Plan: a whole life design with fixed premiums and a guaranteed death benefit whose cash value is credited with a current interest rate, ages 0 to 75, from $15,000.
- Flexible Universal Life: adjustable premiums and death benefit, ages 0 to 80, from $25,000. As with any universal life insurance, paying less than planned can weaken the policy over time.
- Final Expenses Plan: $5,000 to $15,000 with fixed premiums and no medical exam, for ages 15 to 80, meant for funeral and medical bills (see final expense insurance: what it covers and costs).
- Guaranteed Acceptance Life: $2,000 to $25,000 for ages 40 to 80 with no exam and no health questions, for people who cannot qualify elsewhere. Guaranteed-issue plans usually have limited benefits in the first policy years; the exact terms are in the policy.
Alfa does not publish a list of riders or rates online; it directs shoppers to an agent for a quote.
Other products
Alfa agents also sell annuities through the life company, and the wider Alfa group sells auto, home, farm and commercial insurance. Alfa Health offers individual and family health plans for Federation members in Alabama, ACA-compliant plans in Georgia and Mississippi, and Medicare supplement coverage.
Buying and service
Alfa sells life insurance only through its own agents. The website has a coverage calculator and a "start your quote" form, but the quote leads to an Alfa agent rather than an online purchase, and the permanent life page asks shoppers to call to begin a quote. The agent finder covers Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi.
Customers manage policies and payments through a MyAlfa online account and the Alfa2Go app. The customer service line, 800-964-2532, is staffed Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Central time, and online chat and email are also offered. Because the same agent typically handles a household's other Alfa policies, many customers deal with their local service center first.
Claims
Alfa's claims page directs customers to call 800-964-2532 for claims assistance, or to log in to a MyAlfa account to report a claim; customers must create an account to report a claim online. A beneficiary who is not an Alfa customer can call the same number or contact the agent who sold the policy. Insurers generally ask for a certified death certificate and a claim form; see the life insurance claim checklist for what to gather. Alfa does not publish life claim payout times.
Ratings and reputation
Alfa says AM Best affirmed the A (Excellent) financial strength ratings of Alfa Insurance and Alfa Life Insurance Corporation effective May 28, 2026. In 2025 Alfa Life was named to AM Best's list of life/health insurers rated A or higher for 50 years, one of 10 companies to reach that mark for the first time; Alfa Mutual Insurance Company has been rated A or better since 1953. Alfa Life does not publish ratings from S&P, Moody's or Fitch.
Alfa Life was not among the brands ranked in the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Individual Life Insurance Study, which covers larger national insurers. Complaint data for the company can be checked through the NAIC Consumer Insurance Search or the Alabama Department of Insurance; see the Alabama state guide.
Who it suits
Alfa Life fits households in Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi who already use, or want, a local Alfa agent for their other insurance and prefer straightforward term and whole life products. Its lineup covers the full range from large level-term policies to small guaranteed-acceptance coverage, but shoppers who want to compare prices across many insurers or buy online will need an independent agent or another company. Anyone outside its three-state territory cannot buy from it.
- Strengths: AM Best A (Excellent) rating affirmed in May 2026 and an A-or-better record since the 1970s; term lengths from 10 to 30 years with conversion to age 65; no-exam options from Rapid Issue Term to guaranteed acceptance; owned by policyholder-owned mutual companies rather than outside investors.
- Weaknesses: sold only through Alfa's own captive agents and only in Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi; no online purchase or published rates; no S&P, Moody's or Fitch ratings; little public detail on riders or claim payout times.
