Overview
Assurity Life Insurance Company is a mid-sized insurer in Lincoln, Nebraska, owned through a mutual holding company, Assurity Group, Inc., so it has no outside shareholders and its policyholders elect the board. It sells individual life insurance alongside disability income, critical illness and accident coverage, and offers several of those products to employers as voluntary benefits. Sales go through independent agents and brokers rather than its own career agency.
The Assurity group ranked #99 among U.S. life insurance groups by 2024 individual life direct premiums written, according to NAIC market share data, with about $106.7 million in premiums and a 0.07% market share. At the end of 2025 Assurity reported $2.5 billion in statutory assets, $24.3 billion of life insurance in force and a 709% risk-based capital ratio, which it describes as higher than the industry average.
Assurity is also known for being a Certified B Corporation. In 2015 it became what it calls the world's largest insurance company to earn the designation, which requires meeting standards for governance, worker treatment, community and environmental impact. Its LEED Gold Certified headquarters in Lincoln has living roofs.
History
Assurity dates its roots to 1890, when the Modern Woodmen Accident Association was formed just west of Lincoln by members who wanted to help one another in times of need. That organization became Woodmen Accident and Life Company.
In 2005, Woodmen Accident and Life joined with two other century-old Lincoln insurers, Security Mutual Life (later Security Financial Life) and Lincoln Mutual Life (later Lincoln Direct Life), and the combined business took the Assurity name. If you own an old policy from one of those companies, Assurity now services it.
The structure today is a mutual holding company, Assurity Group, Inc., that owns Assurity Holdings Inc., which in turn owns Assurity Life Insurance Company, according to a New York Department of Financial Services examination report. Assurity Life Insurance Company of New York was incorporated in 2015 and began doing business in April 2016, so New Yorkers can buy Assurity products through a New York-licensed company.
Susan L. Keisler-Munro, an actuary, was named to succeed Thomas E. Henning as CEO in 2021 and is now chair, president and CEO.
Life insurance products
Assurity sells three main types of individual life insurance through agents:
- Term life. Level premiums guaranteed for the initial term, with the option to convert to permanent coverage. Assurity also offers Life Protect+, a term life bundle, through its agent quoting platform. An Assurity example on its website describes a 35-year-old buying a $500,000, 20-year term policy for about $37 a month; treat that as the company's illustration, not a quote.
- Whole life. Lifetime coverage with guaranteed cash value and level or increasing death benefit options. Premiums can be paid for life, or finished in 10 or 20 years or by age 65 (see limited-pay whole life: 10-pay, 20-pay and paid-up at 65). Assurity says its whole life may pay annual dividends and is available as a single-premium plan. A level term rider can add extra temporary coverage on top.
- Universal life. Permanent coverage with flexible premiums, level or increasing death benefit options, and access to cash value by loan or withdrawal. See how universal life insurance works.
An accelerated death benefit rider is built into Assurity's life policies and lets you take part of the death benefit early after a diagnosis of a critical, chronic or terminal illness. Assurity does not publish detailed issue limits or no-exam thresholds on its public site; agents get those through Assurity's quoting tool. Assurity does not sell variable or indexed universal life.
Employers can also offer Assurity term and whole life as voluntary benefits. Those policies work similarly, but the details follow the employer's plan.
Other products
Beyond life insurance, Assurity sells short-term and long-term individual disability income policies, critical illness insurance (including a Quick Issue version), accident insurance and accidental death coverage, and fixed deferred annuities with a guaranteed minimum interest rate. For employers, it offers voluntary accident expense, critical illness, disability income and hospital indemnity plans.
Buying and service
You buy Assurity coverage through an independent agent or broker, or through an employer. The quote and apply tool on Assurity's site is for licensed producers, not the public, so you cannot buy a policy directly online.
Policyholders can use the MyAssurity online account to check policy information, pay a bill and submit some health and wellness claims. Customer Connections is at 800-869-0355, extension 4279 for policy service, or [email protected]. The call center is in Lincoln and is open Monday through Thursday 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central time; Assurity says it consistently connects callers to a live representative within 90 seconds. Loan and withdrawal requests are submitted on a form and take about five business days.
Claims
Death claims are handled by Claims Reporting and Services at 800-869-0355, extension 4484, by email at [email protected] or by fax at 800-869-0368. Beneficiaries can also download a death benefit claim package from the customer center, choosing the state where the claimant lives, and mail it to P.O. Box 82533, Lincoln, NE 68501-2533. Expect to provide a certified death certificate and a claimant statement.
Assurity says it processes most claims in 7 to 10 business days. Deaths within the two-year the two-year contestability period can take longer. See how to file a life insurance claim.
Ratings and reputation
- AM Best: A- (Excellent) with a stable outlook, assigned November 6, 2025. That is a step below the A and A+ ratings held by many larger mutuals.
- Financial position: For 2025, Assurity reported net income of $11.9 million, surplus and asset valuation reserve of $507 million, over 99% of its bond portfolio rated investment grade, and $296.6 million paid in benefits and dividends.
- J.D. Power: Assurity was not among the 23 brands ranked in the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Individual Life Insurance Study.
- Recognition: Assurity was named a B Lab "Best for the World" honoree for governance in 2022.
Who it suits
Assurity suits middle-income families, small business owners and self-employed people who want life insurance together with disability income or critical illness coverage, from a policyholder-owned company with a strong community and sustainability focus, and who are happy to buy through an independent agent. It suits less well people who want to buy online without an agent, want indexed or variable universal life, or put a premium on the highest financial strength ratings.
- Strengths: Policyholder-owned mutual holding company; broad mix of life, disability and critical illness products; built-in accelerated death benefit for critical, chronic or terminal illness; separate New York company; published 7-to-10-business-day claim target.
- Weaknesses: AM Best rating of A- (Excellent), lower than many mutual competitors; sold only through agents or employers, with no direct online purchase; small life insurer by premium; limited product details published for consumers.
