Overview
Columbian Financial Group (CFG) is the family of companies behind Columbian Mutual Life Insurance Company, a Binghamton-area life insurer that sold small policies to working families for more than 140 years. The group ranked #81 among U.S. life insurance groups by 2024 individual life direct premiums written, according to NAIC market share data, with about $200.7 million in premiums and a 0.13% market share. Almost all of that premium comes from policies already on the books.
Today the group has two life companies. Columbian Life Insurance Company of New York, the flagship and parent, is the former Columbian Mutual Life Insurance Company, renamed when it converted from a mutual to a stock company on September 8, 2026. Columbian Life Insurance Company is its Illinois-domiciled stock subsidiary, formed in 1990 with a home office in Chicago. Both are now owned by JAB Insurance, the insurance arm of the investment firm JAB Holding Company.
The important thing for consumers is what happened between 2021 and 2026. A planned sale to Constellation Insurance Holdings collapsed, Columbian stopped writing new life insurance in 2024, both companies were placed in court-supervised insurer rehabilitation, and JAB bought them out of rehabilitation in September 2026 with new capital. The company says it has about 300 employees and pays roughly $200 million a year in death benefits; it had about 700,000 policyholders in 2024, according to trade press reports.
History
The company traces itself to 1882, when it began selling life insurance to working-class families in the boroughs of New York City; it was incorporated as the American Protective Association. It was mutualized and renamed Columbian Mutual Life Insurance Company in 1952, and between 1970 and 1990 it expanded into all 50 states. Between 1990 and 1996 it formed Columbian Life Insurance Company in Illinois and acquired Washington National Life Insurance Company of New York.
Columbian then grew by absorbing other small mutuals. It bought UNIQ benefit solutions in 2003, merged with Philanthropic Mutual Life Insurance Company in 2006, roughly doubled in size by merging Farmers and Traders Life Insurance Company into Columbian Mutual in 2007, took in Mutual of Detroit in 2008 and merged Unity Mutual Life Insurance Company into Columbian Mutual in 2011. Policies from all of those companies are serviced by Columbian today.
In June 2021 Columbian's board approved a sponsored demutualization: when a mutual insurer goes public in which Constellation Insurance Holdings would buy all of the newly issued stock and invest up to $100 million to fund cash payments to eligible policyholders and strengthen capital. The closing slipped repeatedly, and AM Best downgraded the group several times during 2023 and 2024. In June 2024 Columbian announced that the transaction would not close, that it had stopped writing new life insurance and that it would lay off about 25% of its staff, mostly in sales.
Regulators then stepped in. The Illinois subsidiary, which had been under confidential conservation since October 2023, was placed in rehabilitation by the Circuit Court of Cook County on July 29, 2024. New York's superintendent of financial services petitioned on July 10, 2024, and the Supreme Court of New York, Broome County, placed Columbian Mutual in rehabilitation on August 13, 2024, with the superintendent as rehabilitator. In November 2025 JAB Insurance signed an agreement to buy both companies as the centerpiece of a plan of rehabilitation. The deal closed on September 8, 2026: Columbian Mutual converted to stock, was renamed, and the prior mutual policyholder equity was extinguished under the plan. The Illinois court approved the end of that state's proceeding on September 3, 2026. JAB runs CFG as a standalone platform alongside its other U.S. life business, Prosperity Life Group, with JAB's chief risk officer, Mark Reilly, as CEO.
Life insurance products
Columbian does not currently sell new life insurance policies; it stopped writing new business in June 2024, and JAB had not announced new products as of early October 2026. Before then, the group specialized in small face amount coverage for middle- and lower-income families and seniors, sold by independent agents: final expense insurance: what it covers and costs (the Dignified Choice line), preneed policies sold with funeral arrangements, simplified issue term and family whole life.
If you own a Columbian policy, its terms are unchanged by the rehabilitation or the sale. In-force business includes whole life, level and decreasing term, universal life (including Farmers and Traders universal life) and final expense and preneed whole life. Riders on older policies include accelerated (living) benefit, accidental death benefit, children's and grandchildren's term, guaranteed purchase option and other-insured riders. Policies originally issued by Unity Mutual, Farmers and Traders, Mutual of Detroit and Philanthropic Mutual are administered by Columbian. If you are wondering why your policy is serviced by a company you did not buy from, see when your life insurance policy is sold to another company and closed blocks: what happens to policies a company stops selling.
Buying and service
Because no new policies are issued, there is nothing to buy. For an existing policy, call 800-423-9765 (Monday to Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Friday 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Eastern) and use these extensions: customer service 5920 and billing 5907 for most policies; customer service 4900 for Dignified Choice final expense. Policies originally issued by Unity Mutual have their own line, 877-832-8243, and Farmers and Traders universal life policies use 866-950-9064. Payments without a billing notice go to P.O. Box 1381, Binghamton, NY 13902-1381, with the policy number included. Service request forms are posted on the website.
During rehabilitation the company told policyholders to keep paying premiums as usual, since a missed payment can still cause a lapse. That advice still applies after the sale.
Claims
Beneficiaries can start or update a death claim online through the "Start or Update a Claim" page on cfglife.com, which sends a secure link by email. Claims representatives are available Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at 800-423-9765: extension 7557 for final expense, 5905 for preneed, 5916 for all other claims, and 7511 for Farmers and Traders claims. Throughout the rehabilitation, the regulators said claims would continue to be processed and paid in the ordinary course. Have a certified death certificate and the policy number ready; our claims guide covers the usual steps.
Ratings and reputation
Columbian currently has no AM Best rating. AM Best downgraded the group's financial strength rating repeatedly as the Constellation deal stalled, to B- (Fair) in April 2023 and C++ (Marginal) in June 2023, and in June 2024 downgraded it to C (Weak) from C+ (Marginal) and withdrew the ratings at the company's request. No S&P, Moody's or Fitch rating is published. Columbian was not ranked in the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Individual Life Insurance Study.
The rehabilitation itself is the central reputational fact. It was a regulator-led rescue rather than a liquidation: policies stayed in force, claims kept being paid, and the plan brought in new equity from JAB. Had liquidation been needed, the New York superintendent's notice said policies would have been backed by state guaranty associations up to their limits ($500,000 in benefits for New York policies). JAB says the deal adds capital and gives CFG access to the investment and risk management of a group with roughly $30 billion in invested assets; a new rating, if one is sought, will show how strong the recapitalized company is.
Who it suits
This profile is mainly for people who already own a Columbian policy or one from a company Columbian absorbed. Their coverage continues on its original terms under a new owner with fresh capital. Shoppers looking for new final expense or small whole life coverage need to look elsewhere for now, because Columbian is not issuing policies.
- Strengths: Policies and claims were honored throughout the 2024–2026 rehabilitation; recapitalized by JAB Insurance in September 2026; a long record (since 1882) in small-policy and final expense coverage; online claim filing and clear phone extensions by policy type.
- Weaknesses: No new policies sold since 2024; no current AM Best rating after a 2024 downgrade to C (Weak) and withdrawal; former mutual policyholders' ownership interest was extinguished in the conversion; limited phone hours, especially on Fridays.
